Personally.. never been a fan of the gimzo-that-gets-you-out-of-any-situation-win-any-fight type of stories/ideas. In fiction, I don't think anything/anyone should be made so strong as to that there are no weaknesses/faults, etc.
But that's just my opinion...

Ahh, GreyCleric08, I bow to your superior nerdiness. You can quote your source. I, alas, cannot. I don't remember where I heard it, but it makes sense if you look at the way Vader, Luke and Obi-Wan hold their lightsabers.
If you look at young Obi-Wan, however, swinging that thing around like a majorette's baton, the rule seems to have flown out the window. I think that's what Lucas was commenting on in whatever interview I heard.

Saber combat in the orginal was much slower...I blame the CGi for speeding it all up...(Sigh)

I always fancied the Minbari Denn'bok too. Could fit in your coat pocket. And Willie Garvin (sorry to quote him again but he's one of the coolest characters ever) called it's predecessor the quarterstaff the 'finest non explosive hand weapon ever devised' and who could argue with him.
A plasma cannon that uses enviromental gas heated to ~10,000c by a miniture fusion reactor and then accelerated to nearly the speed of light by rotating magnetic fields?
A Jedi wouldn't need to dodge. Just use telekinesis to rip some of the wires out of the workings. Peasy.

Except that the fasted sabre fight in the prequels was the Obi-Wan/Darth Maul fight, which was done without CGI. Those boys just moved real quick.

The Essential guides have been taken as canon...anything from Lucas does trump them though...
Well then, listen to the Lucas commentary on A New Hope for the trump. He explains that the force (physics, not metaphysics version) of the energy coming from the hilt is so powerfull, that it creates the illusion of weight, and that an un-trained weilder would need 2 hands just to hold onto it (as Luke does), and that only with his increased skill was he able to use it one-handed, as he did in Jedi.

You don't need a weapon if you can kill with your brain. Maybe you could just make the attacker forget all about you and leave. Saves having to clean up the mess.

A TR-116 Sniper Rifle from DS9's "Field of Fire". Basically a 24th century projectile rifle but with an optional transporter to beam a bullet though walls and stuff. Backing that up I would have a Klingon disruptor pistol from Star Trek III (coolest disintegration effect ever) and a good old fashion K-Bar knife (I guess I could say that’s from Space: Above and Beyond if it needs to be Sci-Fi).
Of course I would also have a suit of Mandalorian combat armor (with all the built in weapons like Flame Throwers, Poison Darts, Blasters, Rocket Launchers, Sonic Weapons ETC) like Boba Fett with the TR-116’s sensor system (to see through walls) built in to the helmet.

Plus, the vibroblades I read about in various Sci Fi novels--THOSE sound freakin COOL!!! Imagine holding up a dagger, grinning evilly at your opponent, thumbing a switch, and the blade vibrates so fast it literally blurs... THAT is most DEFINITELY going to leave a mark...
