US Shafted By Serenity DVD
By Scott Gwin: 2005-12-11
Hey American Browncoats! Joss Whedon is really pissed off that you whined and tantrumed until Serenity, the movie based on your favorite TV show "Firefly", and then didn't bother to turn out en masse at the box office to support it. How angry is he? He's sending a giant screw you your way by giving the far more financially supportive (by per population anyway) British fans a slightly cooler Serenity DVD.
We don't usually cover DVD news on this site, but this was just too hilarious to pass up. According to Empire Online, Whedon's release of Serenity will be a step better in the UK than in the US. Those of you laughing right now thinking you'll just order it online from Britain need to remember that Europe uses a totally different formatting than the states. You can order as many copies of the European Region 2 DVD, but most of you won't be able to play it in your Region 1 DVD players. Heh.
So, what's so great about the UK version? It will include a 20 minute bonus featurette outlining Whedon's efforts to bring the movie to the screen. Other extras for the Brit release are pending but the package could continue to get better for the European crowd. Americans can expect the regular goodies like extended footage and deleted scenes, but for once Europe is getting the edge.

Zoey:"Big damn heroes sir!"
Mal:"Ain't we just!"

Oi, anata wa totemo baka da yo!!! Stop raggen on the cross country stuff. Whether Joss or someone else ie one of the execs decided on the format. For me that shit doesn't matter. Personally I say throw this one into the troll country.

What this fails to take into account is that it is currently amazingly easy to get a DVD player that's region hackable. I bought one for around $40 so that I could import Spaced (and soon Black Books!).
Furthermore, there's practically no chance that Joss is upset with his fans. That's just a bit of snarky hyperbole from the author of the article.

You can also use a computer to download DVDshrink (@ http://dvdshrink.org/ ) and buy the UK version and remove the region code, so you can play it in any DVD player. That is what I intend to do.

Quote:Hell no. Joss, much as we love him, ain't that tactful. If he was upset at us, I'd wager that we'd know it.

So Britain gets a better version of Serenity than the US does? So what! I doubt that most Browncoats over on this side of "the pond" could really care and it doesn't matter to me if the Brits get a slightly more "fluffy" DVD because I always have the satisfaction of knowing that 230 years ago we opened up a big can of whoop ass on the British Redcoats at Yorktown and sent them scurrying with yellow stains running down their trousers. So go ahead and feel superior, Losers!

Wow, I think I'll order the British version for Christmas presents instead...
Oh, it's not being released until Feb? The END of February? Isn't that 2 MONTHS after the US release?
Actually all this really tells me is that there will definitely be a "Special Edition" released in the US sometime down the road.
and yes, I did preorder the Aussie set...(just in case.)
