It's early on Saturday morning, and Day 1 of the Big Damned Flanvention is over. The big news item is a negative one: Nathan Fillion had to miss the first day. He was working, and was committed to a day of shooting. No announcement was made about what he was working on. That was especially disappointing to some attendees who were signed up only for Friday's cocktail party and not Saturday's banquet.
Other than that sour note, this con virgin had a blast at his first Firefly event. The opening ceremony was fun, and even with ticket number 210 I had a great seat. I've already met several regular FFF.net posters, including PsychicRiver and Syren (both have seats very close to mine), plus many other fans who don't haunt this board.
The cocktail party was loud and fun, and I was able to meet all the BDH who were present, at least briefly and in some cases more. Adam, Alan, and Jewel were mobbed all night -- poor Adam was backed up against a wall for a good part of the evening, surrounded by an adoring mob (and seeming to love every minute of it).
I was lucky enough to get a little time with both Summer and Morena, who along with Sean left the party rather early. Summer reinforced something that I'd picked up in her published interviews: that she'd been shocked by the prominence of her role in Serenity. She mentioned that her character had been developed rather slowly in Firefly and wasn't really prepared for her story to be the main focus of the BDM.
I wondered if Morena's recent trip to Portugal had included visits to places her family originated from (since she's originally from Brazil). No, it turns out, she was just sightseeing. Not sunbathing, either -- she was in the snowy North.
I had some quality time with Ron Glass, and was able to ask him a question I had in mind. It concerned a slight difference I'd noticed between one of his lines in Serenity and the same line in the shooting script in the VC. His answer was a little surprising: he said that if there were any such differences, they were script changes, not ad libs or improv. He was quite adamant that he didn't do such things! I hope to be able to follow up in a Q&A session today.
My only regret after Day One is that I didn't have my camera on video capture when Alan was introduced in the opening session. He had an alternate explanation for Nathan's absence that was truly classic. The whole room was roaring!
Hope this report isn't too redundant -- I wrote it before I checked whether anyone else posted anything. Shall I continue with Days Two and Three?

So, um, er... what did he say?
Thanks for the report btw. As well-behaved and respectful as I'm sure all flans are around BDHs, I gotta think it must get a little tiring being the BDHs on display all the time.

Keep 'em coming DonCoat. Those of them that can't be there, like my ownself, need the tellin' of the tales to keep us from insanity.
BTW - For them that have been askin', I'll have the TG Freight shirts and the Independents Flag shirts done for viewin' and buyin' later today!

"Yeah, but she's our witch, so cut her the hell down." --Mal in "Safe."
"Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home." --Mal in "Serenity" My all-time fav quote. Love it!

So, um, er... what did he say?
He told us that Nathan couldn't come because he was having some surgery. Nothing too serious. Just some elective surgery, of a rather, well, personal nature. A little, um, enhancement. But not to worry, he'd be here tomorrow. As long as the swelling wasn't too bad.
As you can imagine, he was interrupted quite a number of times during this, so we could scrape ourselves off the floor.
(This came after the official announcement that Nathan was working and couldn't come, by the way.)
Our missing BDH is here now, and did his photo ops this morning. No sign of a limp or unusual bulges anywhere...

I got my pic took with Jewel and Morena (separately). Such hideously ugly women, I can't imagine why I would want to spoil my gorgeous image by having them in it. Heh.
Wait till you see Syren's pic with Adam and Nathan. It was awesome, I hope she posts it for us!
