it sounds like the most fun you can have encased in metal...
how do you fight properly though in just aluminum? It does sound like a laugh, but i was always the more interested in just the making side of things, I don't have any real yearnings to spend my weekend up to my arse in mud and water, half deaf due to the continual blows to the brain pan and regularly coming into close proximity with the pointy end of someone elses pig-sticker.
Long bows sound good though, I knew someone once, sat on the ground and the bow against his feet, the arrow went through the bonnet of a bmw set up a hundred yards away and most of the way through a target behind it.
Jayne would have liked them.
Plus, less mud.

The motorcycles that was just a movie. We could never get insurance for that.
has anyone tried?
seriously though, I think i'm putting people off here,
If you want all of the pictures in my archive, though a lot of them are just shot of LOTR elf armour and the like, you are welcome, I could send you the book list as well, I just need somewhere to send the disc.

We can fight in heavy guage aluminimum because we don't used real edged weapons, once again insurance. The weapons are made of rattan, but they have the same weight and as real weapons and you hit someone hard enough they really hurt. We often make real swords, we just can't use them on each other, at least not legally. There is plenty of room for someone to just make armor if that is their wont. Besides there is a whole lot more to the SCA besides the battles. Yes there are archery competitions. There's the parties, a personal favorite, there's all sorts of arts and crafts, there is debauchery, there are bardic circles for songs and stories, there is dancing, and so much more, but most of all it is a great place to me fine people.
Not so much mud where I live, more dust.
There motorcycle thing, I'm sure someone out there has tried it, I haven't heard of it though. I wonder if they survived. I know that the SCA won't do it because of insurance and also there is a section of our membership that is willing to overlook some modern items such as eyeglasses and maybe a propane stove for cooking, a motorcycle used for jousting would be just too much. Some call these people period nazis, they call themselves Authenticity mavens, a rose by any other name...

yes, i went and actually read the site properly, and found that out.
There are groups in this country that are 'authenticity mavens' real hardcore authentic, they spend months drilling and training, and the camps they set up function with out any modern amenities (though somehow sneaking off to the pub to have a full english breakfast is allowable)
theres a whole industry dedicated to making the armour and all of the other stuff exactly as it was, and then going out and 'testing' it, some of the injuries i've heard of put me off it for life, but they've learned incredible things about life back then and now - proved and dispelled theories about so many things.
but i think i'll stick to watching.

In my neck of the woods authenticy is encouraged, but not enforced. The only rule is that you have to be in costume if you are going to stay over night at a event. Each household (camping group) decides for itself what they are about, who and what and when they are and how authentic thay are going to be. The group I camp with is not too strict though we continually strive to make an effort. There are some purists, the hardest of the hardcore and there are those who are barely skating by on tolerance. A good size event has easily a hundred separate households so you never know what you might see. The reason I joined the SCA to begin with is the fact that the Rennaisance Faire I was interested in held too high a standard for participants. Any one could pay a gate fee and walk in wearing everyday street clothes, but to stay overnight and party with the regulars was a different story. I couldn't afford to buy or create a whole second set of camping equipment just to indulge a new hobby so I joined the SCA.

y'see id be about halfway, i'm one of those 'if your gonna do it, do it properly' types, but i think the lot who are 'are barely skating by on tolerance' (brilliant phrase) are of the no pain no gain school of thought.
i can't say i buy into that. lots of gain, no pain - I guess i'm just a big softie.
Looking through (my pictures) there ain't as many as there were, seems I had a cull at some point, and a lot of them are borderline 16th cent. like the Negroli armour, but theres still a bit of stuff thats useful, and its all pretty, and, literally, shiny. I'll send it off as soon as I can get to the post office.
CMS, those photo's were cool, it looked like so much fun, now i just have to work out who everyone is... I got a few,is the bloke with the beard Haken by any chance? (something about the 'should I know who this is?' comment made me think...

Hi, joining in late. Busy day huh? Much armor conversation. I wish there'd been an armor major at my college, no such luck.
Someone ealier referred to motorcyles ... that reminds me of a movie that was on when cable first started (early 80s I'm talking) about a troop of motorcycle driving jousters. I barely remember it, and I'm sure it was the cheesiest thing ever, but now I'd like to figure out what it is just for s**ts and giggles. Anyone got any idea?

there was no armour major, I studied costume production in a stage school! I'm just a masochist in that I chose to do a history students degree paper, silly silly me.
Aparently the motorbike jousting was from a film, it may be the same one, SR wrote what it was in one of the posts.
maybe that could be the next film night in loafers nook, sounds entertaining.

Seryn. The bloke with the beard was not our beloved Haken, alas. It is TheRealMe, who is another fantastic person you should meet if you have not. He has a contagious laugh and is as merry as a hobbit. I adore him (as I adore every single person in those pictures. Oh how I miss them all! That was one fantastic shindig!)

The film in question is George A Romero's Knight Riders starring a very young Ed Harris and a cast of unknowns and obscure character actors. Is it cheesy? See it for yourself and decide. I liked it when I first came out. I was crazy for motorcycles back then so I was surely biased. I promise if you don't expect too much you won't be dissappointed. I would say it's more a movie to be appreciated for it's novelty than it's attempts to win oscars. That approach worked when I finally saw Waterworld on dollar night. However I felt that I had been mugged and beaten after I saw Star Trek 5.

That's it! Ed Harris sounds right. cool, thanks!
I only assume it's cheesy because I remember watching it several times during those long summer days of being ~8 years old, and movies I really liked at that age tend to be kinda cheesy.
For instance: Caveman, oh yes Ringo Starr and Dennis Quaid. And Diane from Cheers. I loved that movie. "doo-doo, ka-ka. s**t!!" I think I saw it 5 times in the theater!
