Most likely ship

The "So... what's your ship?" thread got me thinking... A lot of people like non-canon ships, but most of us know they're unlikely. What do you think is the most likely ship?
I say Mal/Simon. Those two have a lot of tension between them, but manage to respect each other anyway. If Mal/Inara is anything to go by, Mal tends towards the difficult relationships. Also, Inara may be leaving. Simon seems to unnecessarily complicate things with the ever-so-straightforward Kaylee that I wonder if he'd work better with someone a little more troublesome. Sure, both characters are het, but Mal shows himself to be not homophobic on multiple occasions, and Simon wouldn't be surprised, being a sophisticated doctor from the Core.
Sure, this pairing actually happening isn't likely, but it seems more likely than the others.

*Raises the flag of my particular obsession*
Mal/River, given the last scene of the BDM.
River: I like to hear you say it.
Mal: Love...
They could bond over Serenity in a way even Kaylee can't come close to. And they're the most damaged characters--the Academy was River's Serenity Valley, and vice versa.

I'm a big Mal/Simon shipper. There's tension there, but so much respect for one another.

Kaylee/River could very easily happen. Kaylee's not shy in the least and River has lots of experimentation up ahead of her in life, the good kind, I mean.
If Kaylee got over her crush on Simon and River offered... I see no obstacles.
Kaylee/Jayne would be pretty uncomplicated. If Kaylee ever got frustrated enough to try...
Simon/Inara my favorite! I can easily see this happen.
Mal/Simon I see hampered by the fact that Mal has issues with men. His closest relationships are all with women, his relationships with men all have a flavor of distrust or rivalry mixed in. It's not impossible, but I don't see romance so much as plain sex.
Really, the only non-canon ships I cannot ever see happening at all are Zoe/not-Wash, Wash/not-Zoe and Mal/Kaylee (mei-mei, anyone?). And Book/anyone, hehe.
Though, personally, Mal/River squicks me out. He's too much of a daddy-type and she's too much like a bratty teen. Mal's not a Lolita kind of guy, I think.

I have to say my new interest as far as 'ships go is Jayne and Simon. Something about Jayne's brute masculinity meeting Simon's reservedness just seems... interesting.

If we're to go to the non-canon ships I'd say the one that stands the biggest chance is Kaylee/Inara.

Kaylee's the perfect woman!

Why not? Book/Inara could be very interesting. The whore - *cough* - companion and the wannabe shepard would make quite a couple.
It's not as unlikely as it seems. They are both misplaced on serenity, both have a (dark?) secret and are keen thinkers. The antipode of them is fascinating.

You know... you're right!
Although, I do imagine that of all the limitations his Shepherd life puts on Book, chastity might be the easiest to keep.
I don't see any passion of love between them, but a relationship and sex, that's true could certainly happen.
Oh, and ditto on whoever said Kaylee/Inara. Can't believe I forgot that!

Okay so I note no one says “Mal/Zoë” but I got to thinkin’ and I think that one might be quite likely – especially post movie (if ya know what I mean) …
I know you’ll gonna be bringing up War Stories, but remember, Wash says that Zoë’s problem is that Mal is “the one she never slept with”. And I know that they behave all comic and amusing and “just downright unsettlin’” when they try for a clinch at the end, but, gorramit, they’re both sober and standing about two inches from Zoë’s husband.
I may be extrapolating from my own experience, not to mention psyche, but when you live and work with someone of the opposite sex (assuming you’re het) for that long and still get on with them, there’s usually some attraction involved and you usually end up so drunk or in such a peculiar situation that at some point you act on it (only to never mention it again in the cold light of a very embarrassing morning, or at least until you’re next pissed)…
I also think that often Zoë and Mal’s interaction is a little bit flirtatious, e.g. “of course there are other schools of thought” in flash-back in The Message and her general subservience to Mal despite being a powerful woman …
Oh look – I’ve clearly now put too much thought into this, but that’s my “most likely” anyhow …
