I am SOOOOOOOOOO down with that, Lerxst !

I was a grunt, which means the environment was slightly different, but the incompetence, the stupidity, and sheer bad fortune is exactly the same in any branch of the service.

Not to mention them damn military cockroaches about 3 inches long and the gorram things can FLY too, I swear they're military-issue, cause I've never seen the hellspawned things anywhere ELSE, but they're damned sure in every place the military goes....

You know, dude, yer gonna HAVE to spill on some of these now... how the HELL did one of yours fire a missle into his own bridge ???

And here I thought the penultimate in stupidity (and darwinism) was the dumbass what broke his neck diving headfirst into a foxhole...

My worste fear are elevators, expecially non-glass ones and ones in old buildings. It don't want to get stuck and I don't want the cable to snap. I don't like it when the wire creaks and I don't like it when it buzzes.

hmmm.. scary things... besides femi-nazis?

Honestly, downright, bloody scary would be the thought that there is nothing after death...

If you've ever done this, just lying in bed and actually seriously thinking about that to the point to you believe it with everything that is you, it scares the complete "#%# out of you...

on a side note, that was the night I found faith in God... ;P

Clowns.

Something happening to my parents or my sister.

Heights.

Not being able to breathe.

That sick helpless feeling you get in the bottom of your stomach when you're stuck in a situation that's gonna lead to an altercation, and nothing you say or do can diffuse it.

I don't like be so scared that I can neither move nor speak.

This would have to be my greatest fear. Was unfortunate enough to witness some poor bugger get sucked into the jet intake of a Harrier about 5 years ago (of course, not as unfortunate as the poor bugger who got sucked in). Have been thinking about that quite a bit since watching Serenity a couple of weeks back. I think the scariest thing about dying that way is its so damn quick you wouldn't even know what was happening - one minute you're doing your job and the next your paste. Makes my skin crawl!

Lerxst - Would be interested to here how your guy survived!

... might not necessarily be the reason why the cruiser is called dortmund, but this explanation is a good one for me:

dortmund is a city in germany, "dortmunder" means "from dortmund". in ww1 and 2 german warships were named after people or cities. hearing that the cruiser is called dortmunder directly increased a dark, horrible atmosphere for me, creating a picture of a big, hostile, terrifying warship in my mind.

They have 'em in Florida, but they call them Palmetto bugs there. It sounds better to the tourists than giant flying mutant cockroaches from hell.

Here is a couple for ya;

1: I have been riding motorcycles for 18 years without any major incident, mainly because I ride responsibly-Not like one of those less endowed twits on sportbikes, or a moron who thinks "loud pipes save lives". What scares me are the drivers of 4 (Or more) wheeled vehicles who just dont pay attention. Biggest personal threat to my life, aside from the time I was shot at.

2: The decline in social courtesy and people just not giving a damn about each other anymore. Living in Chicago most of my life I have only seen it here, but I cannot believe that it is limited to this city alone. The decline of the polite society concerns me, because eventually it leads to nothing good.

I am certainly not interested in turning this into a flame war by any means, but since I have been safely and successfully riding motorcycles for 18 years, could you please tell me how they are "death machines"? I am curious because I have found that car/truck drivers who pull out in front of me, cut me off, or have been too busy talking on their phones to drive safely have been MUCH more of a scary thing.

14 years of bouncing in bars tells me that drunk drivers are more likely to be "death machines" in their own right.
