This may be an obvious reach, but....

During war stories, when the crew show up at the abduction site. Book rambles off a string of more military jargon about the guns used. Jayne asks something like....'you do alot of shooting at the monastary?' to which Book simply replies 'Rabbits' ...Now The first time I saw it I asumed like Jayne that he meant for eating... upon reflection I'm leaning towards "runner" as the definition of rabbit here. Maybe Book was in tracking/ or some dark ops branch... we all know hes walking a narrower path for a reason.... Like guilt.

I assumed "rabbits" was a bare-faced lie, and a "End of discussion" from Book.

I agree with you...add a tinge of sarcasm or facetiousness to Book's tone.

Thats wahat makes it so plausable to me.... Most sarcasm hasmore than a tinge of truth... Like "Oh yeah, I am SO hot for your sister!"

That had never occured to me, but I think it's totally plausible to interpret the line like that. Especially since I belong to the "Book was probably an operative" camp.

How about an position above operatives. Maybe a trainer or someone assigning the tasks.

What if Book is God? The fact that he disguises himself as a preacher and thereby, as part of his disguise, worships himself shows how full of himself he really is. What an egomaniac!
As for the shooting rabbits thing, I think Kazzahdrane nailed it.

I'm pretty sure that a 'rabbit' is intelligence slang for a member of the opposing side's intel community who completely defects. As for the useage here, I don't think it was intentional...but it is quite possible for Book's line to have double meaning.
Most likely, it was a little "End of discussion" thing, a way of saying, "Yes, I did shoot rabbits at the monestary. (And other stuff (People))"
"That's why I never kiss them on the mouth."
"When do I get to get sexed up?!"
"This is my most favorite-est gun..."
