God, I forgot this was even the Starfury weekend.
Turns out I would never have been able to make it, friends. Tickets wouldn't have made a difference. Fate was terrible to us, I'm afraid.
Last Thursday, November 17, my little nephew Stevie Jacob Gaines died in a house fire. He was less than two weeks from his 3rd birthday; his mom Sarah is eight months pregnant with her next one, and she had to be treated for smoke inhalation herself, from trying to get Stevie from the fire.
The boy was my brother Joshua's youngest, whom Joshua and his wife named to honor my son, Jacob, about a year after Jake passed away. So the little guy was Jacob's namesake, no less.
I've just come back from the saddest trip of my life. One of the few slightly bright spots? I'm sitting there, one of many mourners, in the house where my brother and his family have taken refuge, (Sarah's sister/Stevie's aunt's house). And there on top of the TV is a set of Firefly DVDs. Turns out, my brother Josh finally watched them, fell in love with Firefly, and the DVD set had been circulating through his in-laws family, from one
sibling to the next. I had a huge nest of converts that I didn't even know about, and now we were all called together by this tragedy.
Sigh.
Needless to say...I would rather just fly away on "Serenity" right now, or page through lots of silly pictures from the Starfury Serenity Con.
So tell me tales, guys. Post me pictures. It's been a rough, rough time out here.
