'The Message' WAS the last episode that was filmed...and if they show had run 22 episode (that is, if it hadn't been canceled in mid-season) then you would have seen 'Objects in Space' before you say 'The Message'...
well, except for the fact that Fox was running everything out of order so God knows how it would have run if they hadn't canceled it...
point is that they DID cancel it mid season...
so Joss Whedon had what he had...
and he decided that the 'Firefly' DVDs would be easier to follow, and more satisfying, if you ended with 'Objects in Space',
because that episode represented River's acceptance by everyone on the ship.
When you view the DVD in Joss' order you end up feeling that there is some closure there,
a lot of unanswered questions...but still, closure.
