what is a troll?

okay, outside of the random "troll under the bridge" kind of thing you read about in children's stories, i have no idea what people are talking about when they mention trolls with regard to this message board. could someone please educate me! these trolls seem to generate a lot of negative feelings and i want to be sure that my posts are not considered "troll-like"!

Troll - nasty, unpleasent type, who eats up bandwidth with pointless and/or insulting messages.
At least, that's what I gather. Bit dangerous comin' into Troll Country to post this. I suggest we get outta here... NOW! (pegs it)

Trolls tend to be people (using the term loosely) who come to a site of which they are not fans or have no interest in the content of the site to start flame wars by posting garbage posts, normally trashing the subject of the site.

Trolls coming to this site normally come here w/ the express purpose of ragging on Firefly, our loyalty to the show, or their belief it is a mistake that a movie has been made.

Check out some of the older threads in this area to see prime examples of troll posts.
