You could be onto something. If the PAX made them kill, and behave in packs, and then it later wore off, how better to prove you're still 'one of the boys' than to show how off your head, and bad ass you are, by self mutilation, raping and skinning your victims alive. So a mixture of temporary psychosis mixed with social conditioning, where if you dont conform..your killed? sounds like it yould have a high conversion rate!

Concerning the Prion issue. First off this is long thread so I apologize if this aspect has been mentioned already.
Scientists have found that a percentage of people have a madcow susceptibility issue while others are not much affected at all. It is quite possible that Reavers could be simply a small population of susceptible people to the opposite effect. This would explain why many exposed to Reavers don’t contract the madness while a few others do.
As for the “madness” while keeping intelligence issue, I completely understand and personally know it is possible to be both insanely violent yet maintain some semblance of control. I was once prescribed pain medication after having my wisdom teeth removed and the reaction was not what anyone expected. Note: I’m normally a very quiet and peaceful person!
My mother suspected something was amiss the next day when she heard growling and yelling in the garage followed by a Volkswagen engine, VW bits and a what not somersaulting past the kitchen window. I have very little recollection of any of this but apparently retained enough of my faculties to repair the car at some point seeing it was working when I got home the next day. It wasn’t pretty to look at but it worked and I hurt like hell from all the cuts, bruises and torn ligaments.
