No help with a pic, but you can also catch a glimpse of one of them taking off (Harrier JumpJet-style, vertically) in the "Serenity" 2-hour pilot (not the movie) on the DVD set. It's when they're in port at Persephone, headed back to the ship; you see it rising behind some Blue Sun shipping containers, if memory serves.
The reason those craft stuck out so much to me is because they're heavily based on the Grumman A6-E Intruder that the US Navy relied heavily on in Viet Nam. The entire front portion of the craft is pure Intruder, but they've changed other parts of it for the show (twin tails, different wings, VTOL capability, etc.).
Check out the Intruder at:

Also, the "ambulance" that the crew built for their big hospital heist was made out of a Russian MiL Mi-24 "Hind" (NATO code name) attack helicopter. :)

Sorry, I used to be a freak for warplanes and model building as a kid, and some of that just sticks with you...

I looked around on Google Images under several different search criteria, but couldn't find anything helpful. I watched "The Message" again last night, and slowed it down to frame-by-frame whenever it showed the Alliance craft... after some closer looks, I'd have to say I was nuts for mentioning the A6 Intruder. The ship in the pilot episode that you see in the background might be Intruder-based, but the Short-Range craft in The Message looks more and more to be based on a Russian MiG-29 or Sukhoi Su-27 - at least the forward part of the fuselage and the wing root area.
It *would* make a pretty cool model, I have to say.
