You have a good point Ghola. The reason it didn't work for them was that they were a bunch of fans waveing around a bunch of pocket change trying to sway Paramount. We on the other hand are a large coalition of who are willing to subsidize a work of art. Now if we were to give all our collected funds to Mr Whedon personally he then could self-produce the series. It wouldn't matter what the corporations had to say about it, at that point it would be his money.

Hmm yes the legality of it all. What are our real aims? What is feasible? Another TV series on a network? Don't know. Too many variables. And besides, if Joss gets the go ahead for a sequel, he and the execs might just satisfy us all with a trilogy.
That being said, you never know what you cn achieve if you don't try. So, against the critics and all odds lets rally and see what we can do.
I would gladly pledge $400. I have it and pledge it and would possibly pledge more if and when we get this off the ground. Plus, think also in these terms. If we were in fact to go ahead with a real scheme to raise money, you have to think Bake Sale mentality. Way back in primary school, you wanted to go on a field trip, well you have a bake sale! We need to think of doing the same thing, with proceeds going to the firefly revolution. People sometimes don't care where the money is going, they just want a cupcake.
Okay so I am using the actual bake sale as a symbol for other things we can do to raise money from outside the fanbase.

I just want to say that I have so much admiration for trying something on this scale. I'm a firm believer in the concept that anything worth having takes work and a few risks...sooo, in the spirit of that, I will pledge $200 if this becomes a reality.
However, there are some points I want to make. Not to discourage anybody from this, or trying anything they can, but I think some of the "nay-saying" posts had a few good points.
The problem with this approach is that what it tells the TV execs is that Firefly has a devoted, hard-core fan base. Problem is, they already know this. Hence how the movie happened in the first place. What we need is to show them that this has the potential for a LARGE "casual" fan base. They need to see that this show can reach and excite a really wide, varied audience. Think of the success with Lost. Tons of people watch that show, talk about it at work, etc., and only a small percentage of the viewers are hard-core fans, i.e., going on the websites, buying the extra merchandise, etc. The casual fan base (which is almost always significantly larger than the really devoted fans), the reaching all the various categories of viewership, is what Firefly/Serenity needs to be huge. (This is not to say that we shouldn't make as many of them into hard-core fans as possible -the more, the better for our beloved show =)The fact is, though, most TV viewers are never going to become hard-core fans of anything, even if they watch something every week faithfully.)
What the powers that be need to see, in short, to convince them of this, is huge DVD sales. Getting a sequel to the movie is likely to be a far more manageable feat at this point than bringing back the series. Univeral has already bought the rights to a sequel - they simply need to be convinced that it will be worth it to make. With the movie barely breaking even, the only thing that can save our ship now are getting those DVDs out of the stores and into the hands of the public. Now, I know, everyone here is going to buy a DVD, maybe even a few for Christmas gifts. Great! But what I suggest, for those who can afford it (I don't think anyone should starve, or anything) is to match the pledge you would give here with buying that amount in DVDs. That might equal quite a few DVDs, but the point isn't just sales - it's exposure. Give them as gifts, Christmas or Happy Tuesday gifts, to friends or anonymously (maybe could attach a note to it, like "If you like this movie, you'll love the series it was based on, Firefly." or something) Donate them to charity - lots of charities have fund-raising raffles and need to solicit door prizes from people. Use them as door prizes at your own holiday parties (provided you haven't already converted all your friends =)) Get the word out. If each person you get the movie to (or convince to rent the movie) tells just one person to do the same...well, the ripple effect will be endless. It already started with the great effort on the movie - now we just have to step up our efforts with the DVD. In addition to my $200 pledge here, I pledge that over the next three months (because I'm kinda poor myself, and can't do it all at once) I'm going to spend that much buying Serenity DVDs.
So, yes. Pledge what you can to this list. I think it is a worthy attempt, and it could work. But we know that DVD sales will be the key to anyone in power even looking at something like this. If the fan base is there, it will come. Lets just make sure that fan base is big enough to support it. I want to hear people cussin' in Chinese around the watercooler. =) Keep up the good work, ya'll. W'll do do this!

I've bought the movie posters.
I've bought the Firefly box set and have the Serenity DVD on pre-order at Amazon.
I've got no more to give.

I heard about that debacle on the news. The guy had to refund everyone their money.
What we really needed were more people to go to the movie and I'm not talking about dedicated Firefly fans going to the movie one more time. I'm talking about people who aren't already fans and who aren't even that into scifi going to the movie. That task was really Universal's. They're the ones with the deep pockets that can buy advertising time around the world and I'm not sure who gets the actors on TV talk shows. I don't know if it's Universal or the actor's agents but we needed them on Regis and Kelly, Oprah, the local news and so forth in order to promote the movie to a mass audience who wouldn't normally go to a scifi movie but would go and see something like Star Wars or Star Trek IV. Then, you have to consider the fact that Joss has two other movies that he's working on and he really wants to do more Serenity movies, not revive the TV show, which is legally tied up for ten years anyway.
Sorry for being a wet blanket but I've heard these calls to action so many times in the year and a half that I've been on Firefly boards that I had to finally say something about them. Up until now, I've just shaken my head and moved on to other threads and now that I've said my piece, I'll go back to doing that very thing.
