1) Forget the idea of a new TV pilot, do you know how many of those are pitched every year? Any idea of how few get made, of those how many less get screened and how many less get picked up? Further forget about SciFi, they had the chance to take Firefly after Fox dumped it and passed.
Their big boss Bonnie Hammer says she wants to move away from "space shows" (which is ironic since her big 3 are space shows.) We only have Firefly on SciFi because someone at Universal realised that Serenity might do better at the box office if someone had actually seen the show. The three shows in SciFi's big night lineup pull in a consistent 2.0+ week in week out and all three have been renewed through 2007. By contrast Firefly pulls in 1.7. If you make TV movies you might get SciFi to buy screening rights at $1-1.5M as they currently do with their schlock horror shows.
2) Other than getting Joss to bless the project there isn't much he can do. He is signed to two movies back to back meaning he wont have the time to do much more than endorse the effort. My thought would be to get Tim Minear involved in some way, possibly paying for a first movie script so that at least we have something for the effort.
3) Like I said I don't think a TV series is likely. If a DVD movie is the direction this ends up going the finances of this thing would have to be very carefully structured. It was the "you send us the money and we'll give it to the creators" rubbish that told Paramount to run away from the Trek fan's screaming. Huge amounts of money are spent by the entertainment industry to sue each other or to avoid being sued. The potential legal costs of a "here's a bag of money" sponsors is enough to put anyone off. It really has to be structured like any other entertainment investor with shares and contracts and the whole mess. It needs an entertainment lawyer to write up --- trust me on this my wife writes scifi, the advice of SFWA is don't ever think of using a family lawyer, this is a specialist job--- but it isn't impossible. Ever sat in a movie and watched 8 or 9 company logos show up before things get started? Some of those companies made the thing, some are vanity companies of the stars (if they have a producer credit) and some just supplied some money. That's what we need to be, one of the ones that supplies money.

I'd gladly give $100 if it would help!! Serenity deserves a second chance. Look at all the other crappy shows that they keep on TV, when a quality show like "Firefly" was canceled? What are those TV execs thinking?!

First: you're all nuts. I love this grassroots effort. Helluva gesture... but as a televion professional, I can assure you you can't come up with the scratch to get this show back on the air.

He's not to blame. Firefly simply doesn't have the clout it needs to get picked up again by a network. He made a good effort with the film... hoping to boost interest. But a lackluster performance at the box office proves that Joe Sixpack doesn't want Firefly. The best hope for the future of the series would be a deal with Sci-fi or another cable network like Spike. Sadly, without the network money... it could deal a blow to the high production values that make the show what it is.
Don't get me wrong: I hate it- but that's how TV works. Good to see there are so many die-hard fans. But the amount of money you can put together does not come anywhere near what networks expect for their ad buys.
Firefly will join Sports Night and Strangers With Candy on my shelf of shows that died far before their time.
You have to be grateful that shows that veer from the mainstream get a chance to be made at all, UI suppose.
And for TV sales 101:
Networks expect to make at least 200% profit on first-run programming.
OK: all that being said... keep it up... and you can put me down for $50 for the first new episode.
Just thought we ought to bear in mind what we're up against.
