Let me make myself perfectly clear -- in a moment of possibly useless self focus -- I am not bashing military recruiters, it's their job. I realized belatedly that my term "trolling" might be misconstrued -- I did not mean that recruiters were "trolls" (well, what they do on their off time, who knows :) ; I wanted to make a metaphor around the idea of fishermen laying their nets, hence trolling.

My grandfather was a top recruiter for the US Navy during WWII; he was also one of the "poster glory boys" whose image was used in recruiting efforts. I am very proud of him, as I am of my other military service family members -- including other grandfather, father, brother, husband, sister-in-law, and yes, myself. This includes service in in both gulf wars and Iraq; and yes, we too ran out of money for college and joined. I get 'ya and I'm very happy that you came out of your service in a good place and are doing well. The big shiny promises did not pan our for some of us.

What I am concerned about is a growing recruiting tactic that has recruitment efforts being conducted on high school grounds, to minors (in most cases), and not during regular "career day" expo's. This policy also puts the school administration, parents, and students in the difficult position of having to sign deferrments if they do not want their student/s placed on a national recruiting call list. This is a predatory practice. I have a young son and several nieces that I really don't want inappropriate pressures laid upon them when and where they are supposed to be in a "safe" zone, a place of learning.

For the most part, my true and nearly complete reason for posting originally on this thread was to chime in on the creepy, un-patriotic, treasonous comment by the fool-hack Mr. O'Reilly. He said an ugly, ugly thing, and there's no way around it. I don't take him seriously, but I'm among those who think that it was innappropriate and indicative of some seriously scary rhetoric going around lately (compairing this to Pat Robertson's declaration that God will ignore the prayers of anyone in Dover, Penn. -- even during a disaster -- because the school board voted out proponents of ID in the science curriculum -- please!). Anyway, I just don't think that our country needs anymore of this back-biting kind of commentary coming out against our own citizens for engaging in the democratic process.
