This is the first time that I am publishing information about this project, so please pardon the message length.

I am a writer, a multimedia designer, and a student with a lot of time on his hands. I have been writing the script and collecting video for an independent multimedia DVD commentary on Firefly. It's called "Firefly; A Special Feature". In it, I look at every episode in some detail, and the project also includes "essays", discussion of the characters, and other descriptive and analytical stuff. It's written for fans, and I hope to get some reactions from people who life to discuss Firefly.

This is an extremely difficult project, because it involves professionally recording my audio portion, editing about two hours of matching Firefly video footage, and worrying about too many project logistics to waste your time mentioning here. The reason why I am trying to do such a bang-up job is that I see this kind of project as a spearhead into a new kind of expression. Fans can get permission to use video for a massive promo piece that makes everybody happy (including, presumedly, those who gain from Firefly's increased profitability)

Anyway, I am reaching crunch time. My script is done, and I am scraping for funding of a professional audio recording. I am playing phone tage with Mutant Enemy Productions, and I hope to get their input soon, but in the interim, I need a bit of fan support. I'm not going to get into the legal details of strategic copyright violating, but a community behind me will allow this independent project to get off the ground.

I am looking for people who want to attach their names to the project by helping with the artistic parts of the DVD creation. Specifically, I want a cute twangy soundtrack, and I could use some other help with the DVD interface design.

Please feel free to contact me at pbgaines@pbgaines.com with any questions or comments. I will also be replying on this discussion board. I graduated yesterday, and I am happy to say that I can now spend the required time to make a project that I (we?) can be proud of.

P.S. A project description can be found here:

P.P.S. I finished a sample video. Email me if you would like a look-see.

I just watched your sample piece. It was excellent. Its a shame Fox didn't commission something like this before the roll out of the show. I notice SciFi did something similar with Stargate on Friday. What gets me was, as I sat there watching Strgate because nothing else was on, I kept comparing it (adversely) to Firefly. Sigh. If you could send something similar to SciFi maybe they'd get the idea that Firefly should be added to their lineup. Even if ony as a series of movies, like thier SciFi premiers. I hope your enterprise is a huge success and the ME retuns your calls.

You should post this on the official forum.

http://forums.prospero.com/foxfirefly/

Lot's of Browncoats post there.

And I can't get your sample clip to work. Can you post it as a downloadable file? For some reason Real player tries to load it for awhile, then eventually crashes.

Sounds like a cool project, and I wish you luck. Hope you can get permission for use of copyrighted material and stuff.

Yeah, anything but Realplayer would be great. This sounds very interesting.

Thanks for the comments. I posted to the other forum.

I also just encoded the file in Windows Media for your pleasure. The Real version is probably only usable in RealOne.

FOX rejected my request to use the copyrighted material. That is to be expected, though. I am starting a dialogue with Mutant Enemy, so I am hoping they can get on our side.

That was really great. Seems like a perfect way to get your Master's degree. Good luck!

By chance, I ran into a portion of the SG1 documentary that you mentioned. My commentary is, of course, more in-depth and less self-serving, but that is a good media placement for artistic analysis of this type.

I see a significant difference, though. My project is written for those who already know the show. You notice even in my sample piece that the video cues are referencing scenes that kinda require a bit of foreknowledge. I am hoping that fans will take my commentary and use it as a starting point for conversation.
