The Fifth Element - The preview looked like it was just another b grade sci-fi, so of course I had to see it. I loved it. Probably my all time favourite movie. Had everything I like, Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy, brilliant timing, great cast (the best bad guy). Can't recommend it highly enough.

I agree, brilliant movie. In fact, its still one of my all time favorite SciFi movie (it even says so on my BIO page!).

To be fair to the thread, I wasn't actually "surprised" that I enjoyed it, I enjoy almost anything Sci-Fi no matter how bad. However, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and how poorly the movie was received.
Did anyone here NOT like The Fifth Element? If so, why not?
BTW, BrownTrousers - you spelt Fifth wrong on your bio - sorry to nit pick, now I better go check my own spelling

I remember when I was a kid, we were staying at the house of a friend of moms, and one of the flicks they put on was SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. Now, being a guy somewhere between ten and fifteen and hating crap like THE LITTLE MERMAID, I was not eager to be watching this particular kind of Disney flick. But upon sitting down and actually watching it, I actually ended up liking it a lot. I havn't seen it in a long time, but seeing as how now I'm somewhat of an animation connisour, I think I'd like it even more now than before.
I like this tread, because it touches on something that I think makes being a movie geek worthwhile. The way I see it, the hundreds of movies that come out within a calender year is like a pile of gravel. The majority of them are pebbles and dust. Sometimes you think you find gold, but it's actually iron pyrite. And sometimes, you actually find a gem or a diamond in the rough. But the ones you cherish the most are the ones that on the surface look like regular pebbles, but upon close inspection is a gem. And it's these gems that you stumble upon accidentally that end up being the ones you cheirsh the most.
For me, one gem that I discovered accidentally this year, was THE UPSIDE OF ANGER. It's this indie comedy with Joan Allen and Kevin Costner in it, along with Alicia Witt, Erika Christensen, Keri Russell and Evan Rachel Wood. It's about this high class woman who becomes an angry drunk when her husband disappears, and the movie follows her as she befriends her next door neighbor, played by Costner, whose this ex pitcher for the Detroit Tigers who now hosts a sports radio show who talks about everything EXCEPT baseball. It also follows each of the daughters as they deal with this disappearance of their father. While this might not sound like the most appealling thing on paper, it is in fact one of the funniest, poignant comedies, and one of the best movies of the year. Going into SERENITY, I knew it was going to be fantastic. But going into UPSIDE, I had no idea what to expect, so the emotional response I had to the flick had a deeper satisfaction for me.
I often find these hidden gems with indie films, which is why I'm a huge indie geek.

I'll second Deuce Bigalow. A friend told me it was good, so I gave it a shot, and it really surprised me.

One movie I was surprised I liked was The Fellowship of the Ring. I went in terrified that Hollywood was going to botch it, ruining the story and Tolkien's legacy. Instead, Peter Jackson brought Tolkien's world to life. I remember watching them going through Hobbiton and thinking "Wow, they're really in Hobbiton!" Everything was exactly the way it should be, and I loved it.
But boy was I terrified going in that they'd betrayed the story and that I was sitting down for a three hour cheese-fest whose awful dialogue & needless FX would only be drowned out by the sound of Tolkien spinning in his grave like a propeller. So glad that didn't happen!

I wouldn't say I don't like it, but I've never liked it as much as I think I should. I merely think it's "alright." I can't put my finger on it, though. I'm not really sure why.

Fight Club - when I saw the trailers I thought it was just a stupid film with lots of fighting a blood. When I finally saw it round a friend's house I was surprised how brilliant and clever it was. Definitely a film you need to see twice.
Late Night Shopping - Surely you only need to see the title to know that it's crap? No - this is a wonderful, wonderful film about four people who work night shifts and hang out in a cafe afterwards, arguing about stuff like whether they are friends or aquaintances. Still doesn't sound very exciting does it? Trust me it's well worth watching - Great character development and very funny too.

Agree about Upside of Anger. When I heard Kevin Costner starred in it I was so mad with my friend for taking me. Then I watched it. He was just brilliant.
Batman Begins. Mildly enjoyed some of the previous batman movies. Was completely riveted to this one - batman how it should have been from the start. And, of course, Christian Bale. Whoa.
