Something odd in The Message

Other than "cos then the show would be over and that's not gonna happen"? Probably because it never pays to follow up one illegal activity with another.
As for the burn question, having watched that scene quite a bit now (it's Washtastic!) he says "hard burn" in The Message, but in Serenity it's "full burn." I'm thinking that there might be a difference.

Right, could be (reaching to make sense of his beloved Space Western, he said:) "hard burn" is similar to an afterburner as used on an aircraft, i.e., it's an atmo flight mode trick.
Maybe, as is often the case, I should really just relax.
Having grown up on Marvel Comics, I have it in my head to always go for the "No-Prize" (once described as a box of anti-matter Crackerjacks). This was once a prize awarded for finding mistakes in the comics, but later became an award for finding them and coming up with plausible explanations for them.
Every show, over a long enough time line, is going to have some inconsistencies and to me it's most fun trying to reconcile them without breaking anything.

(every time I hear the episode title "The Message" the little sampler in my head plays "Don't push me 'cause I'm close to the... EDGE," etc. Am I showing my age here? Too old school?)

What she said. What they did in the pilot was diffent, in the pilot it went boom-go here it was constant, clearly a diffrent thing.
