In the beginning of the episode "The Message" where River is having some difficulty eating a ball of candy suspended from a stick by a string:

How DO you eat an Ice planet?

I went to the Renaissance Fair a few weeks ago with some friends...they sell round, Italian ice-like frozen treats, which two of us purchased. I commented that my food, too, was problematic. It was, however, possible to eat. I suspect they're similar to Ice Planets.

Ice planets are also problematic to make, as I'm sorry to say I can report from experience...

I don't think the ice planets are ice cream the main problem river was having was that it was too light and kept moving away so it must be something light like candy floss but... frozen...

mmmm... frozen candy floss...

anyway where was i... umm... yeah so not ice cream.

perhaps you twirl the stick around to shorten the string, making it less able to swing away

I would eat an ice planet with much fondness and glee. I would pretend that it was full of little ice people who worshipped me as their god, and i would toy with them, annihilating all of their major cities and wiping out their way of life. i shall sum up my feelings using the following three words...
Ice....
Brainfreeze....
France....

thankyou for your time.

Oooookay. I would just twirl the stick to wrap the string around as someone mentioned earlier but y'know your way is cool too, TommyTucker. Although you shouldn't play with your food.

I think that River's main problem in trying to eat the ice planet had nothing to do with the ice planet but with River's inability to sit/stand still and eat it.

The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems.

I would say just jam the stick up through the middle to make it like an axis through the planet. Then chow down on it like any other food on a stick. Seems like the Jayne thing to do, anyway.
