I cannot believe that FOX TV can cancel a great show like Firefly and then let a lunatic like Bill O'Reilly on TV URGING AL-QEIDA to bomb San Francisco!

This is insanity! And Fox news should be made aware that this sort of inapproriate "reporting" should not be allowed. O'Reilly should be at least sanctioned and fined but at best FIRED!

good question.. is he ever serious? he sounded serious.

He was angry that SF voted to limit military recruiters on high school campuses. He said that SF should get no federal money and if they wanted to leave the Union they should do so... he then went on to say (sorry paraphrasing) that Al-Qaeda chould blow up Coit Tower cus no one would care...

I am all for freedom of speech.. but I am also for calling ppl on inappropriate speech as well.

We the people own the airwaves.. some of those "owners" live in the Bay area,,, he should be fired.

Yea, that was a horribly vitriolic thing to say. O'Rielly spouted off because SF voted concern (key word "voted") over the practice of military recruiters trolling through schools. A CBS link to the story and video clip is at http://cbs5.com/topstories/local_story_315014627.html

"If you want to ban military recruiting, fine. But I’m not going to give you another nickel of federal money,” O'Reilly said. “If I'm the president of the United States, I walk right into Union Square, I set up my little presidential podium and I say, ‘Listen, citizens of San Francisco, if you vote against military recruiting, you're not going to get another nickel in federal funds.’”

That statement probably didn’t surprise those familiar with O’Reilly. But his rant didn’t end there.

“If Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it,” he continued. “We're going to say, ‘look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

Those remarks haven’t gone unnoticed.

"Consider the source," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. “There are a lot of people that love their country, and embrace the military, but that doesn't mean…that people of San Francisco can't stand up and say ‘hey, there may be some issues, and we want to send a policy statement that raises awareness.’”

O’Reilly has attacked Newsom in the past, but this time the Mayor says he has taken things too far.

Um, O'Reilly's argument is pretty weak, but it wasn't like when the president said "bring it on." I'd just let it slide.

Whoa, hey now. I'm all for bashing O'Reilly over a stupid remark, but let's not bash military recruiters. My best friend is a Navy recruiter, and he's no troll. In fact, there are two very good reasons why you should appreciate military recruiters:

1) For some kids, the military is a great opportunity. Take me, for instance. Grew up in a lower-middle-class white family (just to prevent accusations that the military is racist). But mom and dad couldn't swing college tuition. There was no way I was getting scholarships, cause I pissed away my grades in high school. Didn't want to get a job at a factory or gas station, and I certainly didn't want to go to a vocational school. So when the military came a-knocking, I raised my right hand. I considered it a privilege to serve my country. I was honored to act in her defense. I was thrilled with the opportunity for travel. I excited about the prospect of the GI Bill. And best of all, I got some discipline instilled in me. I'm now a sophomore in college (which I'm paying for with the GI Bill) and I'm getting stright A's (thanks to the discipline I learned). The military is a mighty good option for a lot of people--I'm living proof that they don't just prey on poor minorities.

2) Recruiters enable the all-volunteer service. There's an easy way to eliminate recruiters: reinstitute the draft (though I don't necessarily advocate that). If service is compulsory, there's no need to recruit. But if you want an all-volunteer force, you're going to have to get out there and recruit--no two ways about it. So see recruiters as a blessing: they keep the military from being a compulsory service.

Wasn't it SF that voted to not allow the USS Missouri to anchor there permantly and become a museum? Even Nancy Pelosi was critical of SF voters for that move, saying this wasn't the SF she use to know. If this city has gone so far Left that it's completely out of sync w/ the rest of the country on matters of security, then it runs a risk of being a target for al Qaeda. Ok, that may be a bit of a stretch, but I'm guessing that O'Reily was gunning (pun intended ) for that angle.

He was more warning SF than calling for them to be a target.

There's probably something to his point of view.

(Oh yeah, one is Fox TV, while the other is FOX News. Not the same thing. )
