[q]You know, Jayne does tell Mal that he'll betray him if the price is right. Also, he joined Serenity when he betrayed the guy he was working for then. And he betrayed Stitch. I say Jayne, 'Ariel' notwithstanding [/q]

That's in the pilot, long before Ariel, and also before he pitches in and helps rescue Mal in War Stories (with no reward in sight).

In the commentary for The Train Job, Joss says that Jayne's character was originally "designed just to be an asshole, that was the idea", but that Adam made the character "beloved instantly". He may have been originally envisioned as an internal threat, but the character evolved. Given the chance, Jayne would repeatedly save the ship and crew.

The biggest danger/threat must be Mal's inner demons. He must work through them to grow as a character.

Maybe true, but...(BIG Serenity spoiler):

He's not much threat if he's DEAD is he? Unless he comes back wanting vegeance for everyone just leaving him like that...

Wash is a simple Pilot. A amazing pilot but hes there for the same reason as Mal. He fell in love with the ship. Then he fell in love with the ship's first mate.

Kaylee. Kaylee's a plant. How do I know? Well, the pixies told me, but if you doubt them, could anyone really be that sweet and cheerful all the time? ...I didn't think so. She's clearly got ulterior motives. It's no coincidence she "happened" to be sexin' up Bester when the engine failed...

I'm a big, big supporter of that.

Early: Where'd she go?

Simon: I can't keep track of her when she's NOT incorporeally possessing a spaceship, don't look at me --

The crew's loyalty to each other is the biggest threat to Serenity.

The biggest danger is that Jayne will accidentally pull the pin while juggling grenades and blow a hole in the ship.

You all missed one person - Mal. One day his un-grounded sense of right and wrong could well ge them all killed, or one of his vengeance kill trips. Just look at what happened in Serenity. Plus, the very loyalty he inspires causes most (bar Jayne) to ask very few questions. And everyone makes a mistake sooner or later.

Lets run the list..
Mal - Mal does not love the ship. He loves what the ship represents- Freedom. His crew is his family. He was raised by a mom and about 40 work hands. He used to a "mixed" family. He would die or kill for his family (though I think her prefers he last)

Zoe - Whatever happened in the valley of Serenity and the prison afterwards, her life is connected to Mal's. She loves Wash. She saved his life before the captain's ONLY because it was the "logical" choice. With Wash gone, I would not say she is suicidal but I would say her judgement is impaired. She is a threat but a controllable one.

Kaylee - I like to think of Kaylee as the "Awww Damn" factor i.e. "aww damn Kaylee why did you bring THAT guy on board", "aww damn why did she come barging into the cargo bay like that", and "aww damn Kaylee do you have to use the puppy eyes on me". About the only way Kaylee is a threat would be trying to do the right thing.

Wash - Wash never was a threat. If he betrayed the crew or Mal he knows without a doubt Zoe would leave him and not look back. IF Zoe agreed to leave though I have no doubt he would have left the ship to be with her.

Simon - Here is the biggest threat. He likes Kaylee but .... His first loyalty is to River. He will follow Mal but only AFTER he has determined the risk factor to River. He argues continually with Mal. If faced with a choice of the crew or River, he would let the crew burn. He would be sad but wouldnt stop him.

River - She has BIG issues. I think she would not betray the crew consciously. She already showed she was willingly to sacrifice her life for them. They (as broken and crazy as they are) are her "normal" and her path back to humanity.

Jayne - Oh yes Jayne BELIEVES he can betray anyone. He likes to think he is ruthless. However he has stayed and been forced (via air lock) to acknowledge that the crew means something to him. I am sure given time he will realize what that is.

Booker - His past is shady. His present is confusing. I know Jesus walked among the sinners but I dont think he ever whacked a cop in the face or carried high alliance identification.

Inara - Inara will not betray the crew. It is just that simple. She is a "protector". I have a few theories on her but all in allshe is not a betray kinda person.

All this is just my opinion and does not reflect the opinion of the voices from the vent... well not the hall vent.. the bedroom vent kinda agrees with me..
