Overpriced, but brilliant, not all seasons are on dvd as of yet.

I've got the first two (orange and yellow jacketed) box sets. And I agree, WAY too overpriced.
Quirky show. I like Adam Arkin's role the best.

I always thought that the sun was the real star of the show
there were so many stories that (rightly)
centered around the lack of sun during the long winter
and the continuous sun of the short summer...
I always loved the emphisis of the seasons on the people in 'Northern Exposure'
actually the title kind of supports my position,
I mean, I think Joss named the TV show 'Firefly' and the movie 'Serenity' because he wanted us to realize that the ship is the central character...
it is what protects them from the black
and binds the crew together as a family.
And I suspect that 'Northern Exposure' was given that name because the extreme North really does create an alien landscape....
(okay, I get that you were joking about the moose, but I'm serious about the sun...)

Interesting point about the 'alien ' landscape.
I always thought that Northern Exposure was a joke on the thing of people always wanting a southern exposure in their kitchen to catch the sun in the morning, and in Alaska, a southern exposure wouldn't make that much of a difference, i. e. everyone has a 'northern exposure'.

FF sort of reminds me of NE in that the characters are sort of a family and all have their quirks and personal dramas. Also the writing was of such a high calibur (like Vera)

Add that to the unpolished feel and look of the show, same as Firefly.
I have to admit, some of the storylines were a bit...out there.

I love NE. I've got the first 3 seasons on DVD (I was really annoyed that I couldn't find a season 3 with a parka. I love the parkas!)
It was overpriced, but I used to watch reruns on A&E for years until they stopped showing it, so I just HAD to have them. Anyone know when season 4 is coming out?

There are several ways to interpret the title. It also refers to Joel's exposure to people and a way of life that are far outside his previous experience.

Northern Exposure was an awesome show! They filmed it in a little town in Washington. I had planned a trip up there to see the town and then they cancelled the show!

Loved N.E. Almost too much, for a number of reasons. Great stuff, except for the latter episodes. Once Joel moved out into the sticks..... I digress.
One thing I never undestood. The locals up in Alaska, it is said, HATED that N.E. They called it their 'Dukes of Hazzard'. Now, I'm born and raised in GA, and have never watched a full episode of DoH. It's just too horrible for me. Sorry, I'm just not inbred, nor play a banjo,chew tabacky, etc... But N.E., that to me was brilliant writing, and I flat out disagreee w/ anyone who tries to compare it to DoH. Sorry, it's far better. Far, FAR better.
