I was trying to find out who the bible carrying man really is. For all I know he is excellent in martial arts, knows everything about the alliance especially military wise, he even knows security details, not to mention his perfection in using firearms against commandos on that space station. And again when he shot down that transport ship all on his own shortly before he died ?
Who was he really ?

He seems to know a lot about how "operatives" work, and people aren't supposed to know that the operatives exist. The doctor in charge of River's conditioning didn't know about operatives, and he was hip deep in the secret, off-the-books subculture of the Alliance.
I'm wonderin' if Book is a retired operative. And if the operative we met in Serenity might become a shepherd, or something like, after he says, "they know I'm no longer their man."
Enara comments on how the operative is a "true believer", and Mal and the recording pretty much shoot his belief system all to flinders.
