in the BDM, whats the shot for? (pico-spoiler)

I suspect that it was supposed to play a part or have some importance later in the film, but the follow-up scene(s) was(were) dropped. Removing the innoculation scene would have disrupted the awesome long shot in the opening, so it was left in despite having no other significance.

Of course, I could be wrong.

doesn't inara in the pilot give simon her syringe and say its a standard companion innoculation kit? a likely story...

No, Inara gives Simon something else. Joss has said that if the series had lasted, Inara's syringe would have been explained. Inara's syringe, like Book's past are two of the many mysterys of the Firefly 'verse that might never be solved.

Maybe it was a sexy pheromone drug that made everyone think that Inara was really hot, a memory which is automatically triggered by mention of her name or the sound of her voice, so it works over video too, if you've seen her before, when in reality she's a hag.

is if that is the case, why not use it in the movie where she has to fight Reavers?

And we know, cuz Joss said, it isn't a suicide kit. He said it's more disgusting than that.

I think, she's toting around the DNA of some lover(who may be dead) until she is ready to settle down, and imagine the discord that ensues when maybe Mal discovers his son isn't his son! Joss likes to make his characters twist, and overcome adversity (or just die! LOL!). I could totally see the story having gone this way had the series continued.

Just repeating my 2 credits worth. Of course, those who know me, also know I was totally wrong when I said, before we knew:

The Alliance made Reavers.
The Alliance made Reavers BEFORE the war!
Book was a high-muckity muck in the Alliance (the movie tells us most likely an Operative)

Keep flyin', folk! I am sure we'll see more secrets revealed in the future (such as Jayne's mom's name is Vera...)

i never knew it was menat to be socially worse than a suicide kit. hmm.. what if it was a poison that affected those that had intercourse with her? she knew reavers would rape her to death, so why not take some out too?
