I wasn't going to reply to this, because I don't want to start a flame war or continue negativity in threads, but I'm just going to comment here.

That may have been your intention, but that's not what you said. There was no 'I feel' or 'to me' in your original reply. You said "those bands are boring and others agree". I did not say "phooey to you 'cause you don't like my music", for all intents and purposes I said "phooey to you for attacking my tastes".

Personally, I don't care if you think my list is boring. Everyone has their own tastes. Nor do I feel particularly in need to "explain" why I like the music I do, my enjoyment needs no justification from anyone ("poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" - Madonna). Much the same as I don't feel the need to explain why I like to drink Diet Coke over normal Coke, or eat apples over bananas. It's a personal thing.

I will, though, to satisfy curiosity: I like the music I do, because I like to identify with the emotion in the lyrics, in the voice of the performer and the music. I like music I can sing to, something I can just open my vocal chords and let loose with. Emotion in this kind of music moves me.

I, too, have issues with the word 'newbie' when used as an inclusive/exclusive thing. I'm fairly new to this site (from about May/Junish this year I think) and don't really consider myself any more or less a part of it than someone who just joined today, last minute, or three years ago.

Again, not really what you said, but how you said it. I wasn't angry or upset, I just stated that it really was unfair that you worded your reply the way you did.

Another clarification (which should in no way be construed as anger or an attack), when I said 'classic' next to Garbage and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, I should have been clearer. I didn't mean classic for the time period, including the entire gamut of music for that time period, I mean classic for Garbage, as in... their first two albums. I think their first two are their best two. Same with the Chilli Peppers, their albums *before* Californication, not after.

I really don't want this to be a 'feel bad' thread, 'cause it's a great idea.

It looks like I'm going to be in the minority on many of these, but here goes.

1.) Barenaked Ladies - "Maybe You Should Drive" is their best, but they're all good.

2.) Garth Brooks - "Wild Horses," "Ropin' the Wind," and then the rest.

3.) Matchbox Twenty - I'm not sure why, but I can listed to these guys for hours.

4.) The Goo Goo Dolls - Same, "Gutter Flower" is easily my favorite.

5.) Queen - absolutely classic

6.) Brooks & Dunn - They're just regular guys who happen to sing. Some of the best country out there.

7.) Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - classic

8.) Metallica - great driving music, "S&M" especially.

9.) Tonic - "Sugar"

10.) Soundtracks from John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and/or Danny Elfman

Well, just like to clear things up. First off, I was the one who started the Top 10 movies thread, which I realize was off-topic. However, that was precisely my point. I didn't want another thread where everybody's attacking everybody cuz they did/didn't like Serenity. So I thought I'd start something fun where everyone could feel free to post their own opinions, not be attacked, and find out what others liked and maybe find some new movies. Now the top 10 threads have degenerated into precisely the kind of thing I was trying to avoid. How about we all try to get along, enjoy life and have fun?

I think we can all do that. I take back what i said. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Jacqui you don't need to explain yourself one but. It's cool. i guess there's a fine line between being critical and being nitpicky.

Heh I like what one guy in here said about "my music is the best and you must all kneel to it" I think that's the way we all feel about our choice of movies of music or anything that's of sentimental value to us. I can understand why some people may not like Lamb of God or Mueshuggah (very hard) or not like sheryl crow or sarah McLachlan ( very soft) but I guess there's one thing that I don't understand is how anyone couldn't like serenity or firefly. I told my frield the other day that a person with a brain the size of a peanut could see that Firefly is good. I just don't see how you couldn't think it's not good.

Some people listen to different things for different reasons. I listen to my music cuz i appreciate the drummer or the bassist. Some others listen to music to relax and have something on in the background( which I occasionally do). I guess maybe a more proper question to ask would be is why you like what you like? So anyways, hope this cheers up this thread a little more. You know, send the good vibes thoughout the room and what not.

I like Wilco, The Wallflowers, The Shins, and The Smashing Pumpkins out of your list. I haven't heard some of the others.

Best drummer I've ever heard is Dave Weckl, from the Dave Weckl band. It's fusion jazz. The guy is insanely good. Next best drummer has to be Gene Hoglan (the Atomic Clock or The Man with Four Arms and Three Legs) from Strapping Young Lad. I'll have to check The End out for sure. One of the things I like most in my music is dynamics, especially when it comes to rhythm. I love odd time signatures, sudden changes, asynchronous stuff, syncopated, etc. etc. I also like to hear math evident in music (Lateralus, etc.)
