Posted over in Whedonesque...

International Serenity openings being canceled. Argentina, Thailand, Taiwan, Brazil and Singapore have all decided to release Serenity direct to DVD.

Dunno how much these guys would add to the take, but I guess this is bad news, and an indication of Universal's attitude to the box office takings so far....

I heard from a friend of mine (works for part of UIP)that the execs got involved midweek, and pushed for the 'straight to dvd route' as a cost reduction exercise.

Man this sucks...

Ah crap...well I keep hoping it'll do really well in China...awful lot of people live there who could give an awful lot of money to Serenity.

I like this idea! Top 10 reasons they might love it in China:

2046
Summer, post Fight School!
Idiot Americans, wildly mis-pronouncing outrageous Mandarin phrases.
Idiot Americans thinking their culture will be dominant over Chinese culture in 500 years.

Ok, 2 reasons, 2 rants.
I hope they really love it in China, and it develops instant legs!

Bright n' shiny cap'n, not to fret.

Well, those countries generally make up only 5% of the international take, but…

It’s getting worse. Latest word on Whedonesque is that Greece has apparently dropped it, and Germany is either going to do a limited release or drop it entirely. I suspected the UK turnout was a bit of a fluke, but this is insane!

EDITED TO ADD: The thing with Germany & Greece is as-yet unconfirmed, and probably won't be officially confirmed (or denied) until the UIP people return to their offices after the weekend.

Historically, China is responsible for only a tiny portion of worldwide box office numbers, due largely to the heavy pirating that occurs there.

I think it's been pulled in China as well.

Does anybody know what the current overseas numbers are? At boxofficemojo.com its only updated through 10/17. I know the movie premiered in France but there are no numbers on it.

Man, I have never been this obessive about BO numbers before. God, I want this film to succeed. I want a sequel at the very least. Being a Browncoat sometimes makes me feel empowered and pathetic at the same time. I wanna keep this ship flying. Why o Why does have to be this hard?

Thanks for letting me vent.
