1) Have you been a fan of the show since it's premiere? If so, what did you like about it? If not, how did you find out about it later?

I was a fan of Buffy and Angel, so watching Firefly was a natural progression. From the first episode, I was completely hooked. The characters were funny and real, and the setting was the best mix of western and scifi I'd ever seen.

2) What does the term "browncoat" mean? How did it come about?

"Browncoat" was slang for the soldiers fighting on one side of a galactic civil war - like Redcoats, or the Blue and the Grey of the civil war. The term carries over to fans of the show, as we identify with the characters of the show, many of whom were broancoats in the war, or share that broancoat philosophy of freedom and independence.

3) Have you been at all involved with efforts to save the show in the past? If so, what did you do?

I spent the time between the Fall of Firefly and Rise of Serenity getting as many people as I could to buy the DVDs and discover why it was so wonderful. On a side note, EVERY single person I convinced to watch it became a die-heard fan. Over 32 individuals - and 100% satisfaction. Well, except for the "where's the rest of it?" part.

4) What do you like most about the show?

No question - the characters. Joss creates people you love, people you hate, people you can't live without. Then he frosts the cake with amazing writing and storylines. Add Zoic's amazing, beautiful effects, and you're right with the rest of us, wondering how a show like that could fail.

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?

I got the DVD for christmas from my husband. I was SO excited to see the episodes that had never been shown, but I started from the beginning, and watched the DVDs over three days. Oddly enough, even though I've received several Buffy DVDs, Firefly is the only one I watched over and over and over.

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?

I was pretty much keeping an eye on what was going on with the show, and I heard about it pretty early. I was VERY excited. Mostly because I wanted more, and I was going to get more, even if only another two hours. I've had a lot of favorite shows get axed by FOX, and this was the first time I was actually going to get to see more, after so many times of losing it all, it was pretty amazing.

7)How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)

Only once. I wanted to go back the next day, and I STILL want to see it again, but I haven't had the money :(

1) Not really since the premiere ie., Firefly but since I watched the DVDs. My Buffy fanatic friend (whom I pooh poohed in the past) was all keen to watch the show because it was a Joss Whedon product. She didn't have cable at the time and it was VERY hard to find it on FOX. I caught parts of two episodes on TV and went "whatever". S'okay but didn't seem worth the effort to set the VCR. Then my other friend -- IT geek with whom I trade scifi novels -- bought the DVDs and shoved them under my nose. I borrowed them and watched and have been hooked ever since.

2) As far as I know, Browncoat refers to the "color" associated with the independents, purple bellies are the Alliance. It's the Civil War reference that Joss uses as he says he was reading The Killer Angels when the idea for the show came to him.

3) I spread the word. Been lending my DVDs to everyone I know who wasn't a convert -- at times I felt like a Firefly pusher.

4) The characters and the writing. Joss has given us a 'verse that feels real. When you turn off the TV, these people are still living in the black and doing their thing.

5) Yes, after I borrowed my friend's set I bought my own and then bought another set for another friend of mine.

6) I don't remember how I heard about it, may have been on Yahoo News. But it was a shiny moment.

7) Only twice so far but managed to get 3 other people who NEVER would have gone into the theatre.

The whole how did the movie come into play, you can read about it in the Visual Companion to Serenity -- book. Joss says that Universal was already interested even before the DVD hotcake selling thing. The DVD sales only made Universal feel better about the deal.

The BDS is something we ALL want to know. Currently FOX still holds the TV rights for any new series and Universal is waiting for the box office #. Since the BO isn't all that shiny, the going thought is that the DVD sales for the movie may make the difference. All the actors have signed on for two more movies so anything is possible.

I think another thing you may want to mention is the diversity of the firefly/serenity audience. Just looking around the theatre, there were a range of ages and about the same # of malesfemales. I don't think this is the typical action scifi flick audience. I saw little old ladies, and giggly girls, as well as the IT geek type. It's as Joss says, he thinks of his products as multi-genre.

A) I didn't get to watch the show when it first came on to Fox, but I had heard about the show from my dad. When he said that it was by Joss, I wanted to watch it because i was a huge Buffy and Angel fan. I was really interested, but I didn't have the time to actually watch it. When the DVDs came out, my dad bought them because he absolutly loved the show. It was then that I finally got to watch the first episode. I think I realized that I was obssessed with Firefly after the episode "Out of Gas." I had watched less than 14 episodes of Firefly and it was already my favorite show ever. I was in love with the characters, in love with the ship, and in love with the show.

A) Other people have answered this, so I'll let it be.

A) I wasn't involved in efforts to save the show, but I did promote Serenity when I found out that it was being made. I hung up posters and nagged everyone i knew until they went to go see it.

4) What do you like most about the show?
A) That's hard. I LOVE everything. The characters are amazing. They have so many levels. The plot in each episode has always been interesting and thought provoking (something i love about Joss is that you can always read between the lines and find something you didn't see before). The music was really cool. Greg Edmonson mixed music from different cultures and it had some cool effects. And finally, the show is pure Joss and Joss is an absolute genius.

5) Do you own the DVD of Firefly? How'd you feel about it when it came out?
A) Of course I own the DVD of Firefly. I didn't really feel anything when the DVD came out because I hadn't been able to watch the show before that. My dad was ecstatic, however.

6) When did you find out that Firefly was going to be made into Serenity? How did you feel about it?
A) I found out about the movie, again, from my dad. At that point in time I hadn't watched the series yet, so I wasn't excited about the movie. I said I might go with him and my brother, but I wasn't sure. Flash forward 14 episodes and I was counting down the days until Serenity and wondering if I could go in costume as my favorite character, Kaylee.

7) How many times have you seen Serenity? (Be honest, lol)
I have seen it four times so far - twice on opening weekend, once the next weekend, and once on the weekend after that. My ride flaked on me two other times or else I would have seen it even more. I'm planning on seeing it at least once every weekend that it is out in theatres.

At what point did a movie come into play? Did Joss have to fight for it? Where can I get more info?
A) Well, I know that Joss promised the cast and crew after they were canceled that he would find a home for Firefly or some form of it. From there he went to different networks trying to get them to take Firefly and make it shine. This didn't work for the revival of the series, unfortunately. Thankfully and amazingly, we did get a movie.

Is there any future plans for anything? A sequel? Another series?
WashedOut's answer is one of two opinions. And it contradicts with mine. I am sure we will get a sequel. In fact, it will actually be a trilogy. Universal had all of the cast members sign on for a trilogy. The deal was that if Serenity made $80 million worldwide, Joss could make two more movies. This $80 million includes Box Office numbers, but also (i think) DVD numbers. The number of DVDs sold (which I'm sure will be huge) will have an impact on this number, too. I personally know people who just don't go to the movies anymore. They get any movies that they were interested in on DVD when they come out. The Box Office numbers aren't great, but many

(1) I've been watching since the first Fox promos. I used to turn up my nose at Buffy, then I ended up getting hooked on that, then Angel, and when I saw Joss' name attached to this new show, I jumped in right off the bat, and immediately started wondering what I'd missed.

(2) As others have said, Brown is the colour of the Independents.

(3) Sadly, I couldn't provide much more than moral support. Up 'til last year I was still a student, and had no money.

(4) The writing, how the show and characters are layered with subtlety and realistic detail, instead of being just your standard TV-friendly stereotypes. The characters just seemed real.

Also, Kaylee. She's pretty.

(5) No. Again, I have no money, and DVD boxed-sets in Canada cost an arm and a leg.

I'll definitely be buying the movie when it comes out. I know what I'm buying all my friends for Christmas.

(6) I found out the day it was announced on this site (in fact, I used to have the page bookmarked before I cleaned out my favourites). I posted links to the announcement in every forum and to every Email address in my address book. So, yeah, I was excited.

(7) I only made it three times before it got pulled. First Saturday, then on Wednesday (with a guest), then on the second Sunday.

Thank you all so much! Your answers have really helped to give the story an identity. It's hard to go in-depth into another world and not hear from the people that live there, you know?

Anyway, for an update: the story's going well. I can post it here once it's finished! Thanks again guys. I've got one word for you: LIFESAVERS!
