I actually think it would be a huge mistake to have a kid running around on Serenity. The crew works better together than jst about any cast I have ever seen, and I think the addition of a new child actor would jeapordize that. I don't really want a Junior Wash piloting prodigy, because with the resident child prodegy, there is the cheese-factor. Anyone remember Wesley on Trek or Lucas on SeaQuest? River has managed to avoid this, but I think having two would push the luck even for Whedon! I also can't see Mal being too thrilled with the prospect of a child on his boat.
Besides, Serenity already has a gifted new pilot in River. Bottom line, as fun as it would be to have Wash's kid, I think it would muddy up the beautiful flow of the crew.

sounds about right
but like you said it would be fun
HJ: *Hiccup* *hiccup*.
JAYNE: Mal the kid's hiccuping what do we do?
MAL: You just gotta scare him.
JAYNE: Pain is scary...
WASH: Little River just gets more colorful by the moment. What'll she do next?
ZOE: Either blow us all up or rub soup in our hair. It's a toss-up.
WASH: I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it.
Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze fuh ur-tze

I'm not sure... I like the idea of Zoe being a mom - she's a warrior now, but we've never seen the side of her that cares. I think it'd be great for her character to show some emotion and sensitivity.
No matter what happens to the future of the series, choosing the right team is key. Whoever they would bring in as a new actor/character would be a potential problem.
Let's just hope there is a future for our pretty Serenity and her crew.

Or Connor on Angel...

Ooh, I have an idea!!!
I remember Joss saying in an interview that Wash would be in the possible sequel, without the cheesy "long lost twin" sort of way. Maybe it's flashbacks, but it COULD be a child...
I dunno. It made more sense when I thought of it!!!

Yeah, Serynyty, I saw that in an interview, too (fans asking Joss questions in Australia, actually). But now I can't find it. Do you know where it was?

Then maybe River could be pregnant too? All of them at the same time. Only River's could be immaculate or some such.
Although I can imagine one of the gals being pregnant and River having long conversations with the baby her head pressed up against Zoe/Inara/Kaylee's stomach or even better before they know that they're pregnant (that'll go over big with the abortion croud).
Simon: "River, what are you doing?"
River: "Talking to Joss."
Kaylee: "Whose Joss?""
River, pointing at her stomach: "He doesn't like strawberries."

Hey gang - it's funny I was wondering the same myself not only yesterday. Weird.
Hang on for anyone about to read this + not seen movie - spoiler ahoy! stop!
Just to add my two penneth-worth, i think it would be a mistake to have Zoe pregnant 'cause it only lessens the heartache of losing Wash - now she's left with nothing on her own again, she has to go to that dark place and decide if she wants to come back and carry on as Wash would've wanted or just turn bitter and a bit snippy. It's too easy to have the whole child of my one true love storyline and ruins the impact of his death (i think i already said that woops!). That's just my personal opinion.
Besides we all know what happened last time Gina Torres got involved with the whole baby thing(Angel anyone?) maybe not such a good idea.
I think that was three-penneth on reflection, my bad.
Have a good day all

There's a Q&A on this in Joss interview in "The Visual Companion" book. I'll look up exact quote.
