The Blockbuster website shows what they have through their online rentals--not what's in their stores. The best way to rent Firefly is through an online rental membership.

I use Blockbuster Online--similar to Netflix. Their first month is free, and some of their rental plans are cheaper than Netflix. It also comes with 2 free rentals (including new releases) a month from their stores. Netflix also has a first free month or 2 weeks or something like that.

If you watch movies as soon as you get them, and drop it back in the mail quickly, the per rental price gets very cheap. For example, I paid $10 for the month and got 5 online rentals, plus the 2 free in-stores. Seven rentals for $10 is VERY affordable.

You know, I tried doing it thid way. Pointed the series out to the owner of my local video rent store, stressing the high rating.

His first response: I'll check it out, sci-fi is always good to carry.

A week later his second response: I checked it out. We're not going to carry it. It#s been cancelled after one season, it can't be any good.

I was totally flabbergasted and couldn't think of a smart reply, so I left it at that. BUT,... this "failed TV show" thing really is putting people off, even though reviews are raving. STRANGE! as if no good show ever got cancelled or no good movie ever failed at the BO.

So, being smart, I look up the Hollywood Video website to see if they have any copies. SEARCH shows Firefly...it is even rated...3 1/2 stars. Cool. So then I call the store for availability. THEY DON'T CARRY IT. I called 3 stores...and none of them had it. WTF?

Fine! Bastards. I'll just try Blockbuster. Go to their website. SEARCH finds it....4 Stars! Yippe! Check availability...NOT ONE SINGLE STORE IN MY TOWN CARRIES IT!!!

I am not talking about 1 or 2 stores..I am talking over 15 locations!

IT HAS A HIGHER RATING THEN MOST OF THE CRAP THEY HAVE OUT AND THEY HAVE NO COPIES IN THE GORRAM STORE!!!!

ACCKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so losing my companion cool...and Battlestar Galactica reruns are NOT going to fix it!!!! FRACK!

This is news to you? As an avid videophile, I've long been a non-supporter of the big corporate chains, and strongly advocate patronizing independent video outlets - most communities have them. Usually the independent video stores have lots of alternative movies the big chains don't carry, and are very good about looking into special requests.

If you're in a small, rural area that doesn't have such an independent place, then I agree with the other posters that Netflix is the way to go - if cost is an issue there, they have a low-tier membership for under 15.00 a month.

Good luck!

Now we're finishing this deal, and then maybe we'll come back for those morons who got themselves caught. You can't change that by getting all... bendy...

$3.75 for a rental I can find in the couch cushions. $30 for the set...not in the budget yet.

I understand not having the cash flow, but keep in mind: buying the set is well worth the investment. I have gotten more play out of those DVDs than any thirty-dollars' worth of rentals. I got alot more out of each episode with repeated viewings and commentaries, not to mention the joy of sharing with the uninitiated. To me, $3.75 is too much to waste on a rental since, in the end, I don't have much to show for it. (That, and I've never found that much in my sofa cusions. Old food, yes. More than a dollar in change, not so much!) Netflix and the like are neat, but I've heard of alot of people having to wait for the in-demand Firefly DVDs, so signing up for free wouldn't help if the DVD you want isn't available.

Other suggestions:

-check your local libraries for them

-lookup your local Browncoats, likely someone is willing to loan them (while you save up, at least!)
