Anyone care to suggest what I should do with

www.fruityoatybars.com

?

I registered it, and right now it just points to www.serenitymovie.com. But I wanna do something with it. Maybe a repository for fanvids or something; I know there are lists and links and whatever out there but it would be nice to have them centralized.

Any thoughts?

I don't have any ideas at the moment. Once the DVD comes out you could rip the ad and show stills/a vid clip on the site.

I am quite unhappy that I didn't think of grabbing that URL. Nice one!

there are a couple of places to get good screen caps of 'Firefly', but if you manage to grab screen caps of 'Serenity' then you will attract the interest of a lot of people who do fan vids and fan art...
Also there are always a lot of people who write fan fiction who are looking for a place to post them because they don't have their own sites...

I guess whatever you are interested in, you'll meet people interested in the same things.
I imagine it takes a while to develop your own site....
but that is the coolest site name!

There are places that sell custom imprinted candy bar wrappers. If you are willing to walk the copyright tightrope, you could put "fruityoaty" wrappers on prepacked bars and sell them...or become a custom candy wrapper distributer and make them up for other people.

The latter... I did it with register.com, and while they have hosting, I figured so long as I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it I would hold back from paying more than I had to. We Browncoats have to be thrifty, after all. ^_^

But are there any hosting suggestions for when and if I DO decide to put content out there? (I kinda have to, I feel some sort of moral imperative)

That's one of the things I've thought about. Would be neat to sell stuff like that. I may have to look around. I wonder how much of a copyright tightrope it would be, though? Something to consider further. Thanks.

What I would do if I were in your position:

1) Come up with a few Fruity Oaty Bar designs, presumably based on the ad in Serenity. Then set up a deal with CafePress.com, which can put your designs on t-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers, thongs, and other merchandise. Start selling this stuff via FruityOatyBars.com, and rake in the bucks. It's October and it's starting to get chilly where I live; I'd buy a $20 sweatshirt or a $30 hoodie if it had the Fruity Oaty Bars on it.

2) Also, set up an Amazon Associates account (associates.amazon.com) and link to the Firefly and Serenity merchandise available on Amazon. You'll get a fraction of the money that Amazon gets from every sale made by somebody coming through your site.

3) Consider running contests (à la Fark.com) for fans, like the denizens of FireFlyFans.net, where they could get a free t-shirt or mug for designing a really good new Fruity Oaty Bars ad, or for something else creative. This will help bring people to your site.

I think the opening would need some sort of Flash animation based on the ad in the movie.. and it would need subliminals, well fake subliminals flashed fast enough to let people get it and slow enough to let them see what it says after a few trys. Something like "Buy Firefly DVD Box Set" ... "Buy Serenity DVD" ... Eat Fruity Oat Bars" ... "If You're Psychic And You Know It, Wreck A Bar"...
