I guess im a Browncoat, but that doesn't really make me all that special...I've only seen the movie once, but thats mainly becuase im a busy guy, and i live out in the middle of nowhere, and i mean the middle of nowhere, like i have to drive and hour and a half to get to a movie theater....so i did, on the 30th mind you (opening day), and its AWESOME and you dont know how much i want to go again :( but i just can't, I'm goign to go ASAP again. Im also telling everyone to go and see the movie, and telling to go buy the discs too. so a Browncoat i am!

It seems lately that the money a movie takes in from rentals and DVD sales in the first weeks after release is a BDDeal to the studios. Seems to me I heard somewhere that the movie got to happen partly by way of the enthusiasm and activism of the fans, and partly from the enormous response to the DVD release. I'll be going yet again this week and bringing more friends (yippie! more converts), and I hope nobody's getting too down in the dumps cuz the #s aren't in the billions (yet) for opening week.

While there are yet growing things and the flights of birds wrapping the world, there is continuance. -S. Tepper

For such a niche product, a film based on a cancelled tv show, I don't get why people gotta start this kinda in-fighting. Anyone who likes firefly is a fan of firefly. Why we gotta critisise people who aren't as in to it as others I'll never know. Let's just be happy that there's a broad enough fan base to have casual fans and obbsessive fans alike.

I don't understand the crowd thing thought. Both times that i have gone, there have been a total of like 5 people in the theater, 10 at the most. In fact, when i went the second time, me and my two friends were the only ones there until 2 others showed up.

Zoe: "If she can fly the ship, why take the shuttle?"
Wash: "Maybe she likes shuttles..."
(Silence)
Wash: "Some people juggle geese!"

I'm actually running into the same apathy among my friends. When the Firefly dvds came out, I ordered 2 copies: 1 for myself and 1 to pass around to all my friends. I turned all of them into fans of the show. They really, really enjoyed it. Out of about 10 or so, only TWO of them have gone to see the movie. I invited them all to go last weekend, but they all had better things to do. But I don't get the feeling any of them even -plan- on going. It really does just boggle my mind.

I think this shows the difference between fan and fanatic (yes, I know the former is a shortened form of the latter, but it is time to split that hair).

Fans are people who enjoy whatever it is they like to watch/participate in (sports, movies, sci-fi, etc.) and don't truly care as to the whos, whats, wheres, whens, and whys.

Fanatics are people who want more of the same specific thing (Red Sox to win, Serenity to continue, Lindsey Lohan to get naked, etc) and will go to almost any length to see it to fruition.

I am a sci-fi fan, BUT I am a Firefly Fanatic. I am a football fan, BUT I am a Bengals Fanatic. See where I am going with that?

So, yeah, it sucks that the "fans" are casual about this, but I think the "fanatics" are doing there part, and more fanatics will come along soon enough. Star Wars was never going to be a franchise until the buzz started hitting AFTER the movie left theatres (of course back then it also didn't have DVD release months after theatre release like nowadays, so maybe that drove it harder). I think we will see more of the same, just like when the show was cancelled. People will be amazed, and the slowly start building the buzz for the next piece to be put in place. Serenity happened, like Empire Strikes Back, because the fanatic desire to have more.

Go see the movie. See it more often if you can. Hell, I don't care if you go see Flightplan *coughsuckscoughsucks*, but consider buying a ticket to Serenity and "accidentally" sit in the wrong theatre. :D Just don't worry about the fans. My wife is a fan. She enjoys it but probably won't see it again until DVD. I do not fret. I am a Browncoat, and a proud one at that.

Sure, October release isn't great, Episode III and HHGTTG releasing in the summer probably got it bumped, but hell, we were dead. Fox killed the show. It was done, over. It's been worse than this and here we are seeing a movie that should have never been. We rose again...and I'm thinking we will rise again and again and again should someone attempt to put us down like dogs once more.

And if not, I am still grateful that the movie was made, and I will continue to see it in theatres as often as I can afford. I will own as much related merchandise as I can afford. I will own the DVD. They can't take my sky from me. I love this world, this 'Verse, that Joss Whedon has created, and I refuse to let it go because of a few casual and apathetic people. I've seen too much to the contrary to think that this is over.

Keep flyin', Browncoats! We may be few, but we are mighty! Serenity proves that.

I totally agree.

I am a Sci-Fi Fan, but I am a Firefly Fanatic. (but I'm not a Bengals Fanatic, I'm a Packers Fanatic although my allegiance is being seriously tested this season)

I am broke as a joke, I am crossing my fingers that my rent check clears, but I'm cleaning out the change pig, and going to the theater to pay for my ticket to see the BDM (although I might sneak into Waiting, just cos seeing the film 4 times is getting excessive, even for me). I've bought 8 DVD sets as gifts, I figure a couple of movie tickets ain't gonna kill me.

And to all those fans who are abandoning ship cos they don't like the way Joss did things, remember this, he crammed almost 2 seasons of the show into 2 hours. Do you really think he didn't want to tell a more elaborate tale? One where we got more than 5 minutes of screen time for everyone (honestly if I had only seen the movie I would think Jewel Staite was a talent on par with 'can't act my way out of a paper bag' Gellar, but I know different cos of the show)?

I am just happy enough to stick my middle finger high in the air at F*x in retaliation. A very, 'see what you lost' kind of moment.

This might not be enough for a sequel, but I'll tell you, if I were an executive at Sci-Fi, I would be standing up and taking notice. They already dominate Fridays, I'm waiting for them to take over another night of TV, when things suck unless you like CSI, like Thursdays (although I do like the Night Stalker). Serenity, the Series would be a perfect addition to Sci-Fi's universe of superior Sci-Fi programming. They are doing what they always set out to do, make the best in Sci-fi and play the best in sci-fi. A lot of Stargate and Battlestar fans are Firefly Fans and Sci-Fi knows it. Imagine a Sci-Fi Thursday with Stargate Atlantis and Serenity with a Friday of SG1 and Battlestar. Wouldn't that be the shit?

Don't you think for one second Joss wouldn't go back to TV to tell these stories the way he originally intended. Hell, he could even get the old band back together cos I know Tim Minear would love a steady job that doesn't involve immediate cancellation.

The difference between Fan and Fantatic is simple, a Fanatic understands that things must change for them to remain good, a fan doesn't care and wants it to remain the same cos it's easier to jump in and out of. That's fine, but I like change, and I would have been disappointed if Joss had excluded the Firefly-verse in his long standing way of shaking things up.

Here's to the future, WE HOLD!
Remember folks, Joss and the cast did their parts, now it's OUR TURN!
