True Browncoats vs. supposed 'fans'

I have seen Serenity 3 times now, and plan on more. I'm not crazy, I just love Firefly/Serenity, and I don't want the person who made the call to cancel Firefly on Fox sit back and say "I told ya so".
Here is my problem: people who have watched Firefly, claim to be a huge fan, and are skipping Serenity. A good friend of mine who watched Firefly with me from the beginning, and when it was cancelled was just as angry as I was has not seen Serenity, and as far as I know doesn't plan on seeing it in the theater. Sort of perplexing I guess. I even offered to pay for his ticket and buy him a Pepsi, still nothing. I don't get it. The comic shop I go to has the same laid back attitude. while all the regulars claim to "love" Firefly, none of them have seen it. I don't know if they are just waiting for the dvd release, but it seems to me if you like Firefly you would be there on opening weekend. This truly will be the end for the entire Firefly verse if this is the way it is. These"fans" are killing the true believers. I'm sad, so I will go now.

People not going?!?! And they call themselves Browncoats?!?!

Personally, I never go to the theater anymore. And I mean never.

But, this was Serenity. So, I went opening weekend.

Luckly, (and surprisingly) I didn't hear any jackasses in the theater prattling on the whole time. In fact, things were quite civil. I think it was because there were Sci-fi fans (more specifically a percentage of Browncoats) that made this possible.

For those of you that were in the same theater as me, Thank you.

There are also people who don't like opening weekend because it tends to be somewhat rowdy. My parents will see it, but in a week or two (I'll make sure of that ). Hopefully there are enough of that type that will make this movie make Universal think it's worth it to make another one.

IMHO, Firefly arose from the ashes of F*x’s (burning their blundering asses) because despite the (should be executed, executives) airing the show in the worst way possible, it’s survival to the point of the BDM, was, aside from it’s unique, originality, and wonderful characters, also the context of being a weekly, new experience that unfortunately cannot be truly replaced by a (or hopefully plural) movie.

It’s common knowledge that the movie viewing audience has been migrating to the ‘home theatre’ dvd format of viewing (aside from the advancing quality of home viewing, the many conveniences (as pause, replay, etc.) but the added conviences of such things as not having to (travel to, finding good seating, the decreasing quality of theater sound and visual dynamics, and of course the benefit that at home you can easily dispense of the obnoxious (of any sort) of viewers that are a common plague of the public viewing experience.

As glad as I am to see Serenity as a movie, my honest opinion is that unless somehow it gets re-ignited as a ‘quality’ TV series, all the hopeful dreams of the veteran coats or the newly initiated are doomed to reliving the remnants of a true gem that was stolen by those who ‘to paraphrase from Gladiator’ “days of self admiration, shall soon come to an end”

(for anyone interested, the scifi.com Firefly BB site is running pole as to whether Joss's series should (somehow) be continued. I know all the ‘naysayers’ say is impossible, but I read transcript from Joss and crew that ‘under the right circumstances, he would rather continue in TV series form than as movie format’.

I’d rather cast a vote in favor than give up.

Everyone I have introduced Firefly to has seen the BDM. Most of us twice.

My first time I was standing in the candybar line when I noticed the guy in front of me had a similar Jayne(blue sun) shirt to me on. I commented to him on his shirt and we talked for 15 mins as if we were old time buddies. Its a special thing that can make strangers feel like good friends.

Well I would like to think of myself as a browncoat (Big Smile), but I don't know if I have the money for it! (ie. not enough to go enough times to support the movie, buy a browncoat.. so forth :D)

Anyways! I have now seen the movie twice (and I think that is all I will be able to see the movie any time soon). I did take THREE of my friends with me. And they "enjoyed" the movie, but weren't moved. I think my trying to get them to watch the series might have turned them off but being BLOWN away, but they did indeed enjoy it :D

I understand the money issue. I'm a bit cashed out myself as of late. I'm really going to try and see it once a week until it's gone though. I'm also going to continue to ask friends, and family to go with. Hopefully they like it, and spread the word.

I think it takes seeing it to want to see it more. Between the end of Firefly and Serenity coming out was a long time, it's probable many forgot what it felt like to be in the universe.

That said, I'm sure people have their own reasons for wanting or not wanting to see it a hundred times and in the first week or whatever, and I'm not sure it's anyone else's place but their own to feel anything about this either way.

I call myself a fan, but I would never call myself a browncoat. Thats not my style. I have bought the DVD of the show, seen the movie, and recommended firefly to others.

I understand the people who didn't go to see the movie and are waiting for the DVD, though. I do that for a lot of movies. It is hard to get out, with a 2 income family and children. If you want to see the movie thats great, you want to encourage others to go, thats great too. But I won't criticize those who didn't go. People have their own lives to live too.

Some of these places will let you get a credit card with really low initial interest rates, or those check cashing services work pretty well too if you need to hold off the debt til next paycheck...

The movie just need to hold on thru the 2nd week's weekend fo rnow...

I didn't see Firefly when it first aired, but I finished the box set in two days and felt empty and vacant during the credits of the last episode. Does that make me a browncoat?

I sat through all of the credits of the BDM, desperately hoping they'd show me something more. Does that make me a browncoat?

Don't know, don't care. I love the show, thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and wish like hell there was more. I'm thrilled to be able to share this passion with all of you, and to know I'm not alone.

So, if some folks who never actually saw the show or the movie want to claim to be browncoats, I feel flattered, rather than cheated. Be my guest. Welcome to the club, so to speak. What they do (or don't do) in no way diminishes my passion for Firefly.
