Tried to save it, but the damn site was f**king up again! And it was a LOOOOOOOONG blog. Why does this site mess up so often? I get a "Cannot find server or page" trying to come to this site so often! Is it maybe cause there is so many people on at once? or what?

You have to be patient Rakarr. The kind of internet traffic that the BDM has caused can not be handled by this site. As someone said, FFF.net is the first hit on many search engines and the one that many people are obviously visiting when researching the movie & Firefly. Add to that all the browncoats coming here to talk about the movie & looking for box office figures and it all leads to the site not being able to handle that volume of traffic.

I have been here since before the show went off the air & I consider FFF.net home on the web. I am here several hours a day reading and posting & having been unable to visit for several days has been somewhat of a downer. I can cope though since my not being able to log on means that perhaps a whole crop of new people are logging on & perhaps using what they find here to convince themselves to go see the movie.

I know what you mean! I've been trying to access the site for five gorram days! I'm still getting over seeing the movie, and haven't been talking about it much (other than with my friends with whom I saw the movie, of course).

Ok, ok, I know you're doing a shiny job of keeping this place in order, Haken, so I appreciate that. But damn if it wasn't hard to finally get to post here. KF

The problems is that, looking at the symptoms, it meant that lots and lots of people, and most people who were trying, had a difficult time getting in. These kinds of process starvation reallly when the DB was just spinning trying to answer all of these requests really mean that it was mostly locked up and had a difficulty time answering to any of them.

Laymen's explanation. Site was down for hours at a time from being overwhelmed with web requests until the crowd naturally backed themselves off.

FFF.NET runs on two servers that are about 4 years old, one for the web server, one for the SQL server. At the time, those were pretty fast servers, but they're showing their age.

I just added another spare processor to the web server, but I don't have another processor for the SQL server. And it looks like it's the SQL server that's getting overloaded at the moment. Best I could do was to optimize the SQL code and maybe squeeze out a bit more performance.

It must be wonderful to speak a second language.

But seriously, if we need to buy Haken some sort of new beige box, I'm in. Somebody tell us what we need to do.

It's like Avery Brooks said...

When you realize that your website is your business and your server can't handle the traffic... that is an epiphany.

Still the best IBM commercial to date. KF

On the main page of fff.net, towards the left side is a litle box labeled "Support FFF.net", there's a little box inside there to click on to "Donate thru Amazon"... Amazon processes the online donation keeps a very small fraction of it and Haken keeps the rest...

Do we need to earmark it somehow?

Not sure what you mean, but you just clik on the donate button and indicate how much you wanna donate - I think it goes on your credit card or amazon acct if you've got one with them... Then they figure out who keeps what on the other end...

Actually, I was thinking more like "for the new server" or "for the new processor" or some such?

It doesn't look like you can, but I doubt that Haken runs with the money to support a drug habit or gives it to any gun runners ;-) ok, other than the ones related to FF anyways... hehehe
