Historically, box office gross for a late September premiere ranges from lows of $15.6 million for last year's 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' to highs of $35.6 for 2002's 'Sweet Home Alabama.'
How well do you think 'Serenity' will do this weekend?

If you're wondering, here's a list of movies that premiered at about the same time since 2001.
2001 - Don't Say a Word - $18 millions.
2002 - Sweet Home Alabama - $35.6 millions.
2003 - Underworld - $21.7 millions.
2004 - Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - $15.6 millions.

you know, on the poll, I was guessing we would make in the $20 million range (because I'll be happy if we do at least $18 million)...
but then I noticed that 'Flight Plan' made $24 million over the weekend!
And frankly, I think we can beat that...
we have a much more exciting moving,
which appeals to a wider audience.
Here's hoping for a BIG opening weekend...
and an even bigger second weekend!

Does anyone know how many theaters 'Serenity' is opening in?
'Flightplan' opened in 3424 theaters and the prior weeks's #1 'Just Like Heaven' opened in 3509 theaters.

what that's the rub
at Whedonesque someone posted to say that although we'd been promised 3000 theaters, we'll only be opening in 2100...
so that does make it up hill work since a lot of people will have to drive farther to get to the theater.
I do hope it'll get to more theaters later;
I know I live in a little tiny town in Iowa,
and we have a poster in the lobby of the lousy theater w/small screen & bad sound...
so I think that it'll get here in a week or two after it opens
(I'll be going to a great big theater w/great sound for the opening weekend)

I think it'll do around the 21 mark- I hated Underworld and it still managed to do well considering it's relative obscurity.
I think Serenity will have to top Underworld mainly because it won't be crap!

Underworld has a sequal due out soon and it grossed less than Serenity did; further proof that cable viewing, movie rental, and DVD sales definatly influance the future of a movie franchise.
Eddie and the Cruisers was a box office flop but due to cable viewership, it sparked a sequal (which sucked).
The Bourne Identity did less than well in the theatres as well but due to it's high DVD sales it too yielded a sequal.
As for the future of my beloved Serenity, THERE IS STILL HOPE!
