I had heard that Summer Glau was in an episode of Angel, but having not seen them all, I didn't know where she'd show up. I think I recall something about her playing a ballerina, but it didn't click until I saw this ep. In fact, it wasn't 'till she showed up on screen that it hit me! WOW! And how cool is she w/ that accent? I loved her in Shindig w/ that cockney accent...man, that's one talented young lady!

Anyway, not bad for a Monday night's viewing.

I've said this in other posts about this episode but I'll say it again. Cordy and Fred look breathtakingly beautiful in that ep. And yes Summer is very talented. Did he create the role of River for her or did he just think of the character but knew who he wanted right away?

Agreed. Cordy and Fred were both heavenly visions. More than usual. And from watching the out takes, I didn't know Amy was such a good dancer! Mmmmmm..... Amy Acker.

It says on the commentary that he created the character, and then someone (i forget who)suggested to him that he should get Summer to read for the role.

I think he wrote the role before he hired Summer, but afterwards he was so impressed with Summer that he kept her in mind for future projects.

When Firefly began, River was written with Summer in mind.

Because I've just recently had this conversation with someone who hadn't seen the episode, I created some screencaps of River for her...

In the extras of the FF DVD, didn't Jewel mention that she was read for the part of River? I just couldn't see that.

It's been a while since I listened to it, but I'll do it again soon, I have a hankering for commentaries.

It's not uncommon for networks to audition many people for a role even if they have someone in mind for it... and just 'cause Joss preferred Summer does not mean the networks did.

What? Don't look at me like that. We all know the monumental f*** ups that Fox is wont to make. They have the business acumen of... how shall I put it? ... ten percent of nothing -- let me do the math here -- nothing into nothing, carry the nothing...

Personally, I don't think Jewel Staite could be anyone *but* Kaylee. Seriously. She's that darned cute.
