Is there a search feature for the board? I've looked around and can't find one.

You could just go to Google and type in:

site:fireflyfans.net KEYWORD

where KEYWORD is whatever you're looking to search for. It won't be up to the minute but it should help.

I second that. I want to be a good newbie and not duplicate threads, because they get bumped down so fast, but I can't search through the existing ones!

You can search thread titles, if you use Internet Explorer or Firefox (Ctrl-F), or whatever browser Mac uses (Mac-F). And if you do that, but still end up duplicating a topic, console yourself that you found a different (maybe better) way to title it, or @least a different (maybe better) place to put it.
