So I went into comic book stores for the first time this decade for two reasons:

(1) I wanted to put up some shiny 11th Hour posters as part of that guerrilla marketing movement we're all helping out with. (Right? Someone tell me I'm not the only one--cuz I've yet to get somewhere and discover that the local Browncoats have beaten me to it.)

(2) I wanted the Serenity comic.

So yesterday I got my hands on issue #2. I don't regret buying it; it's kind of like visiting old friends.

But my old friends are acting kind of weird.

Shepherd Book is so angsty that he punched Mal. Mal let it go instead of fighting back. Then Mal casually threatened Wash, for no particular reason that I could determine. Heck, even Jayne showed less discretion than I've come to expect from him. For that matter, Badger let the crew get the jump on him--something he seemed to be really good at avoiding in the show. (Badger's capture by the crew also violated one of Mal's defining comments: Everyone always has the advantage over us.)

I hate to say it, but I kind of have this feeling that the characters are sort of caricatures of themselves. I have to wonder how much attention Joss Whedon really had to pay to this project, what with the BDM coming out. (Then again, I haven't seen the BDM, so maybe all of this makes sense in light of it.)

Okay, having whinged (or as I like to think of it, having expressed a critical opinion ), I have to admit that I still like seeing my old friends, familiar places, Serenity herself, and of course those awesome covers. (The store had only one left--but it was a Kaylee. *happy dance*)

Is anyone else bugged by this stuff?

Because I've got the DVD."

Keep in mind that, in issue 2,

Select to view spoiler:

everyone is on edge after the bank job from the first issue... they alsost got lynched, and they made NO money. This is sort of the disaster that mal was trying to avoid in the pilot. They're desperate. And Mal is pissed off, because he lost a good deal. Shepherd got his religion completely bashed on, and so he got pissed.... and Mal knew that Book knew Mal was being out of line. He didn't fight back because, it wouldnt get anyone anywhere, and besides, Mal said some nasty things, both about his word and about Book's religion. As for wash, it isn't pictured well, but I think Wash was blocking Mal's path, hence the arm picture. As for badger.. that's a good point, I liked that badger was always ahead of the crew, though I do like that they finally got the drop on him. Also, remember, like it or not, the crew is heading to the EPIC big screen place, meaning they have to be able to get the drop on the enemy sometimes. I appreciate that the characters are getting better at their lives in a sense, but I hope they dont completely save the day in issue 3.

Well, I went to local comic book story called Brian's Books. they had told me a few days back that they would have issue 2 in wednesday, and low n behold.... I got exactly what I wanted... and I believe Joss said: "I love exactly what I want." :D

I survived a day in Whitefall and all I got was this lousy signature!

I know, when I read the dialog, I try to picture how the cast would read it, and I have a bit of a problem figuring out how they would say some of the things. I think we need to petition for a "comic book reading" by the cast during some con coming up (that I can attend) where they do their best to act out the comics. That would be cool.
