I believe that they have to state it on the comic when they do reprints, since it can effect the value of classic comics...

I forgot to say...one of the signs of great things to come is the response we are getting at Sci-fi, fans of the regular Sci-fi show are becomng 'Firefly' fans, getting excited about the movie, and reading the comics:

My understanding has always been that if the indicia doesn't say anything about which printing it is then it's the first. And if it were a second or third, etc., the indicia would say which printing it was.
The indicias of my copies of neither #1 nor #2 say anything about which printing it is. So I hope I'm right.

OK, for the non-comic book people, what is an "indicia" and where would it be located?

The indicia is the part of a magazine (not just comics--all magazines) where it states the publication information about the magazine. It's usually in very small print and in magazines is usually in back but in comics is up front.
In the case of the SERENITY comics it's located on the inside front cover in that small print at the bottom.
For instance it says: Serenity #1, July, 2005. Published by Dark Horse Comics, Inc....
It then goes on to give Dark Horse's address, copyright by Universal, and their rights and Dark Horses rights, and the usual "any resemblence to anyone living or dead" disclaimer, and that it's printed in Canada.
Now my understanding is that if it's a second, third, etc. printing, then somewhere in that first sentence it has to say what printing it is.
Whereas first printings don't have to say it's a first printing because when it's first printed, the publishers don't know there's going to be a second.
That's why I think that if it says nothing about which printing it is then it's the first printing.
Then again I could be wrong.

I am not sure if it is the same in comic books but in print books, near the copyright line, there is a backwards listing of numbers. The lowest number left is the print run.
Thus 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 would indicate first print run
but 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 would indicate a second print run
First print run is rarely written as publishers don't always know there will be a second print run.
