Hello all! We've talked about our past D and D memories, so now I'm asking for a bit more. As I'm running my current game, I find mood music is good for my bunch. BUT, I'm running out of my own stuff.

What kinds of music - genres, groups, individuals, soundtracks, etc - did you, or do you, use to accompany your heros/villains along their journeys? One thing for adventure, something different for romance?

If you would, pick your brains (if you need to, keep a strainer handy!) and see what you can come up with. Any help is much welcomed, and it's a fun chance to get another glimpse of your RPG past(s).

Film soundtracks work well. Sometimes they enhance the experience. It all depends on the mood of the group I guess. Here are some I tried, with good results:

1492 Conquest of Paradise-Vangelis
great for adventure

Film Music-Mark Isham
Collects music from 3 of his movies. While the first 2 aren't fit for D&D, Never Cry Wolf is great for subtle dungeon exploring.

Legend-Tangerine Dream
This just screams D&D. Good for eerie happenings, and possibly romance

Conan the Barbarian-Basil Poledouris
Adventure/battle/reflective

Power Classics-RCA
Collection of classic composers most powerful works. Verdi, Holst,Strauss, Beethoven. recommended for epic adventures/battles

When I run games, I like to use soundtracks from video games. Stuff taken directly from the later Final Fantasies tends to work well (especially for battles, because it tends to be familiar), but I've also run across remixed version of the classics from Zelda and Castlevania. Legend of Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia, Star Ocean, all good games to take from; also Resident Evil or Silent Hill for a really scary mood, or (some) Megaman music if it's a modern setting.

'Course these days I don't get the chance to game half as much as I wanna...

BlueBomber, I'm sorry you don't get to game as much as you'd like. I know the feeling, since the times we actually play get more and more sporadic. (You know, like jobs and someone's nursing career matters, or something! ) Until the next time you do, I wish you many adventures and epic sagas in your daydreams and night dreams, too!

In addition to ideas others have posted, I'd recommend looking into Midnight Syndicate ( http://midnightsyndicate.com/). They make music specifically for gaming.

I also use "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" (Alan Parson's Project), which is Poe's poetry put to music, "The Planets", "Water Music", and movie soundtracks such as "Pirates of the Carribean".

BlueBomber - a question: Since I've never gotten into the video games much, which Final Fantasy sdtracks do you suggest? I'm realizing there are quite a few different ones out there, and frankly, I'd just get confused.

I'm anxious to try everyone's suggestions, especially so I'll have all kinds of things to pull from. Right now I still need background for a royal tournament, maybe a little romance, and for those hush-hush (or sometimes not so hush-hush) political and conspiracy dialogues that tend to happen behind closed doors or in the shadows of a back ally.

Just about anything from FF7, FF8, or FF X should serve your purposes. There's enough variety in all those games, especially 7, to give you romance, action, and intrigue.

Too bad you never got into video games. I'm addicted, myself.
