I'm planning to run a Firefly RPG and I need some music to play in the background.

I have the theme music from the show but I don't really want to loop that for 4 hours :)

I'm looking for music similar to the Firefly theme - Country/Folk with guitars and fiddles/violins - preferably with no lyrics though that's not essential.

Anyone got any recommendations?

How bout almost anything from the Pick'n on U2 album. It is a Bluegrass group covering U2 songs. Really cool. Well, it helps if you like U2. But it is good even if you don't recognize what they are covering. Stillshiny has the cd, and I think that he has them changed to mp3 on the computer, also. When is this thing?

Starting next Wednesday with my rpg group so I've got some time to pick up a CD. I was just thinking a CD of lyric-less Country/Folk end-capped by the themes would be cool to put on quietly in the background.

Well, I would seriously recommend a small independent band from Arizona called Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers ( www.azpeacemakers.com) (Formerly "The Refreshments" with their hit song "Banditos"). They've got this great southwestern-rock sound that always makes me think of firefly. it's not exactly bluegrass-y, certainly more rock, but they've got the desert, the horses, and the old west styles down pat, I think. Granted, I think one of the best parts of their music is the lyrics, so it doesn't quite fit your "preferrably with no lyrics" agenda, but I still thought I'd throw it out there...

Alison Krauss and Union Station - especially the instrumental numbers. Her voice fits well, but the music is spot on in most of their songs.

Actually, Blue Grass is a good call! My wife has a load of it. I think she has the Cold Mountain soundtrack somewhere too (talking of Alison Krauss).

Funnily enough Carter Burwell's work seems to really suit Firefly to me.... It is a shame he was removed from the Serenity film.

The Fargo soundtrack would work well as would much of the Brother Where art thou? score and soundtrack. Give it a whirl :)

I love the O Brother Where Art thou soundtrack, as Firefly related, even more.
I don't really follow Blugrass or folk music too much, though I am a Nanci Griffith fan.

For the oriental element you could try Vas. They do a variety of Indian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European music, nice to throw in the mix when ever a companion might be in the play. :)

For a more worldbeat sound, but with some fiddling elements, check out Scandinavian roots music ( www.noside.com). Even when there are lyrics, they're in languages other than English, so they don't distract from a game.

Plus it's just great music!
