As said best by Lawrence Olivier in Spartacus, "It's only a matter of taste!" So along the line of unusual pairings may I suggest the following:

Kispexi: Trauma Medicine (a episode by episode reinvisioning of the show with a slash bent)

The Cook Series (can't remember the author but a new character is introduced as Mal's love interest)

Last One Out Turn Off the Lights (again I forgot the author, I'm dumb, but its actually a really interesting and tender threesome [again, may sound wierd but the author really sells it]).

The authors on this cite mainly seem to deal in traditional pairings of those I would suggest:

Anything by Hawkmoth (s/he has an amazing read on the characters)

Anything by Admobell (sp?) an extremely prolific writer, she wrties faster than I can read

CassandraE for non-traditional takes on traditional couples

If you want to find more traditional pairings may I also suggest Firefly Glow Archive and fanfiction.com, both of these cites have a broad range of authors and fic to suit any mood ranging from crazy space incest to slash to truly unusual pairings (including the requested River and Mal). Again, it depends on what you're in the mood for and happy hunting.

Ok I tried and failed to resist the urge to self promote by i'm an egotist. You can always check my stuff out. I have a Valentines from Villians series of poems (I thought they were funny most people thought they were creepy, that whole taste thing). I also have a series in progress (very slow progress), which is an au look at the past and future of the crew.

Very good, you knew the reference. I'm a really big fan of that book and the series in general, though the two follow up pieces arent as good. Happy fanfic hunting.

One unusual pairing story I read a while back ago I always liked was one called NOT PICKLES AND ICE CREAM by liquideyes. It's basically Simon and Wash coming back to the ship after picking up some groceries and talking about various things. I loved this one a lot, because I always felt that Wash and Simon would make a good comedy team. Like a space aged Abbot and Costello.

And I also must join in on the "pimp my own stuff" bandwagon and suggest reading some of my stuff. NOT SO HAPPY ENDING: WASH'S SIDE is a parallel story of a story written by an old fanfic writer called Harriet Vane. She wrote this superb series called TIES THAT BIND, and she added a stand alone epilogue to it that just brings tears to your eyes. And my story is a sort of fill in the blanks story that has a very heartfelt interaction between Inara and Wash, which I think I'm the only one whose ever done that pairing. But my main stories chronologically are THE SERENITY GIG (in which an outsider gives his perspective on the crew and S and K getting married), BLUE HAND BLUES (in which River finds her salvation in music), SHOTGUN TAM (a two parter that starts out action packed and delves into something really deep and psychological) and YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN (which is turning into my domestic epic).

Lemme know what you think.

Peace

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

Oh for the love of...

I have been a reader of fanfic for *every* show, book, ... painting, whatever I'm in love with and it never OCCURED to me that there would be Firefly fan fic.

I'm such a tard.

Can someone please help a pathetic tard and give her some links to good archives?

Please feed the tard.
