Escape From New York. Hands down, one of the best movies of all time. Snake Plissken is a great character. Shame Escape From LA wasn't as good.

I've done some thinking and I have come up with a list I am pretty happy with. There are some questionable selections. Keep in mind that I was not just listing the best movies: I was selecting the best movies with the best memories. Who knows what you were doing. Heh.

I second that. John Carpenter definitely has his moments, and BTLC is full of 'em. My wife doesn't even understand why I like it...but she likes Firefly just fine. When it comes to camp, some people like a dash and some like a dollop, I guess.

"Bridge of Birds" by Barry Hughart is a NOVEL from the 80s which employs a similarly clever, whimsical style: it cracks wise and still manages to create a magical atmosphere in "an ancient China that never was." I've long suspected Egg Chen(from the movie BTLC) is a descendent of Number Ten Ox(from the novel), if not the man himself

Kinda wish Joss Whedon would read it, too - we might see a little more than a superficial smattering of Chinese culture. He's capable of it, maybe he just needs to see it done well before he gives it a try. We already know he reads while on vacation!

I re-watched Empire of the Sun that was 80's right? Any way that was an amazing movie. Everyone forgets about the Japanese concentration camps.

I can't believe I've forgotten one of the best films ever.

THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY

I don't know how many times I've watched this one, maybe 40 or so. Probably more than that actually. I used to ride my bike up to the video store just to get this one movie. It was one of the few that my parents and I both enjoyed (and it didn't require parental permission to rent).

So may wonderful movies mentioned in this thread, many are some of my favorites, and some I'd forgotten about. I'm gonna have to hit Blockbuster this weekend. Just want to add one, which is just about my favorite movie - The Color Purple.

Holy cow, I'd forgotten completely about that movie. I haven't seen it in years, but it's one of the best comedies ever. I'll have to pick it up.
