Times change. Fifteen months ago on this site, one show enjoyed almost universal acclaim, among those (mostly Brits) who had seen it, for being as good as or better than Firefly.
Ultraviolet http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169501/ Only six eps, but it's a complete story, & available in region 1.
Keep the Shiny Side Up . . . (wutzon) Leftover Salmon, "When the Levee Breaks", from "Ask the Fish"

Oh, yes, that's another one: 'Roswell'.
Great show. If only during the first season.
If you watch that, I'd advise you to steer clear of seasons 2 and 3, as they were pretty awful.
But season 1 is very good.
'Miracles' is supposed to be great, too.
"My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

The only thing I've seen that is anything like as good as Firefly is Dark Angel - it's amazing, particularly season1 (although season2 is still better than most of what we're forced to put up with - Big Brother 5 - I ask you?)
Dark Angel is just an amazing show basically - watch it! (you may also have noticed me, cisall and zoot's seemingly endless discussion on the subject).
Smallville is also very enjoyable, as is the new Dr. Who (I haven't seen the old ones).
Have fun dorting through everyone's reccomendations!
...and we will call it...this land...

I was just going to Say Ultraviolet and realised YT jumped in ahead of me. Also Spooks (MI5) which is very good especially the first season. And for comedy value - the BBC's "My Family" which has provided many hours of hilarity in this house. Talking of House - very good show. And if you haven't already seen it Carnivale and Joan of Arcadia, yet more cancelled shows. Dennis Leary's Rescue Me was great to. And having just seen the first episode of Wonderfalls, I really enjoyed this - and Sky One are showing all the episodes too.
Last but not least the new series of Dr Who - this rocked!!
"This movie may be a beautiful butterfly, but I loved that damn caterpillar." Joss Whedon.

As ENGAGING as Firefly? I would also toot my horn for Carnivale, which has already been mentioned here. It's the only other series that I have on DVD, actually, and a good thing too since it only had two very short seasons.
Carnivale has Character development, a damn fine central cast of characters, intriguing and beguiling recurring characters, secret identities, secret gifts, a touch of playful larceny and a deep involvement in American history.
Sound familiar?

I second Ultraviolet, Spaced, The Prisoner, Avengers, Babylon 5 and so on
Also try Blakes 7 (1970s BBC sci-fi - amazing, it got me into the genre and inspired Firefly in MANY ways - I have gone on about this elsewhere so I will shut up)
Plus of course V - can't be missed (at least the mini-series can't).
I also like I Claudius, a BBC historical drama about Roman Emperors - very cool.
For films any of the Ealing Comedies or Hammer Horrors are worth a shot, also any of the Studio Ghibli films.
For anime try Neon Genesis Evangelion
extremely dimensionally transcendental

I put my vote in for Veronica Mars, that's such a great show! The season ender was especially fantastic.. and I can't get enough of Keith Mars! He rocks.
As for The Invisible Man, I have to say, I was a big fan when it was on TV, but I can't say that I rank it in my favorites. It was fun, but looking back objectively you can see the numerous flaws in those episodes. Firefly is so much better.
Alias is good, or was good.. these last few seasons have gotten a bit heavy on the outrageously unbelievable plot twists and such. But Michael Vartan is hot.

All of the live action shows I like have been mentioned the thread is too long for me to read it now. I can think of one really good animated series I loved "Gargoyles" it was on Disney. This was a great show. It contained long involved plot lines much like Babylon 5. It also had some darn good writing.
