Watching 1x07 "Jaynestown" over again for like the third time, and I think I finally figured out what River is talking about where she's hiding from Book's hair. The exact line is something like "If the snow on the roof is too heavy, the ceiling will cave in. His brains are in terrible danger."

The snow is Book's (white) hair. The ceiling/roof is the top of his head. It makes so much sense now. Feels like I should have caught it sooner. Anyway, thought it was funny, and wanted to share.

Lol yea that's it! Of course that was one of the Riverisms that I got first hand.
I'm still trying to figure out "They took away Christmas" in Ariel. *Shakes head and sighs* I may never know.

I think "they took away christmas" has to do with the fact that Jayne isn't going to get the big payoff for turning the Tams in.

My take on this is that it's also a reference to the technique Book is using to block River's reading. Mostly it's Ben Edlund being funny, of course, and hitting the symbol leit motiv of this episode.
River has started the episode with an attempt to disrupt Book's defences and ends it with a disengagement, but I don't think we know if she has managed to read the Book.

Is it scary that what he said makes perfect sense to me?

It's very possible that River was not scared of the hair at all. Maybe when she walked in she finally got a read on Book and was so terrified of what she read that she ran away screaming.

As much sense as that makes, I highly prefer the thought that River was afraid of his hair. Much funnier, cuter, and it doesn't give me nightmares about Book.

My take on the "They took away Christmas" thing was her loss of innocence. She was only 14 when she went to the "school". They took her childhood away from her when they started experimenting with her brain. And she didn't go home for holidays, did she?

But the Jayne not getting his payment explanation is a good one, too.

Anybody else notice the Christmas motif flying through the series?

River says that they took Christmas away in 'Ariel'. She also says that they came down the stairs and took all the presents, leaving nothing but coal.

Mal asks if it's Christmas already when he wakes up in 'Our Mrs Reynolds'.

And Early refers to himself as Father Christmas bringing presents to all the good boys and girls.

I don't know why, but I think Fox is trying to steal Christmas. Fox is the Grinch.
