i thought the LOTR movies were more intense and violent than Serenity. It deserves the pg-13 rating. no big cuss words and no nudity, so it fits.

Yeah, I thought it was tamer than the tv show in some ways. I don't even see how an R rating could be considered.

In both the May screenings in Boston, the word Mal says is 'fog'. It still fits in the context of their conversation, so I am glad they managed to work around this.

Oh. That's actually a little disappointing because as you can imagine "f*** things up" made a real impact, particularly in the middle of all the pseudo-swears. Ah well, just goes to show how lucky we were to catch the first version. I wonder if I'll remember all the other bits that changed.

No big shock on the PG-13. Lord of the Rings was much more violent with their battle sequences showing orc heads getting cut off left and right. While extremely intense, Serenity's violence doesn't dwell on blood and gore. Add to that no nudity, and most of the cussing keeps the chinese and the occassional "gorram", so overall it's safe for the kiddie poos.

I think PG-13 is the right rating & will get more people into the theatre to see it with that rating than an R. I personally don't see the R rating as there was nothing in particular that would warrant an R rating in my opinion.

Are you sure that maybe they didn't just say 'fog' things up all along, and you just heard it the other way? Because from the context I think the other one was unnecessarily harsh (at least if I'm remembering the scene right), whereas 'fog' makes perfect sense for what happened.

As far as the language goes - you are allowed the use of one f*ck in a PG-13 movie. After that, it's pretty much automatic R
From the MPAA website:
A film's single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, shall initially require the Rating Board to issue that film at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive must lead the Rating Board to issue a film an R rating, as must even one of these words used in a sexual context.
