I would have to say season 4 with season 3 as a close runner up.

Season 3

That thing had a lot of build up and major events. I liked it.

Wow. I had no idea people liked the last few seasons of Angel that much. In my opinion the series started going downhill after Connor was taken by Holtz, and never recovered.

1st and 2nd seasons were amazing, the first half of the 3rd season was good. The end of the 3rd season and the entire 4th season I can barely watch. Season 5, with the exception of a few episodes, felt like a waste of a good idea. It was okay, but could have been so much better.

Just my opinion, though it seems like I'm in the minority.

Okkay: I agree with most of that, although the end of S3 was good if you can block out pseudo-Cordy. I thought S5 was solid after the disappointing S4, but like you said it could have been better.

If you haven't seen seasons 3,4, and 5 of ANGEL what follows are some major

*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILER*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS

Okkay, I pretty much agree with your opinions about the last 3 seasons of ANGEL. I liked Season 3 as I was watching it and it was only in retrospect that it lost its luster. Mostly because I feel they never did quite figure out what to do with Connor once he came back and that affects S4. They also never figured out what to with Lorne once they blew up Karatos (except be the Nanny).

I must say the the subplots with Wes were fantastic and they were what kept me interested. And I also thought Holtz (why does he have a German last name?) was a character with a lot of unrealized potential. And they wrote themselves into a corner when they had half-demon Cordy ascend without it leading to anything that made her ascension necessary.

Like S3, I felt Season 4 had a lot of potential. The set-up was intriguing, although Connor/Cordelia was unsettling and kinda felt forced (because it was). The Beast was formidable so they need Angelus. Great. And I loved the ep that showed us how they brought Angelus back. But it was a red herring. Turns out Angleus couldn't give them the anwers they thought he could. Oops. Then the Beast is disposed of too easily. Turns out he's not that formidable after all. Now we have Angelus running around. Interesting in and of itself but he doesn't DO anything except cause some trouble. So we get Faith back. Would have been nice to see Faith and Wes have a conversation where they really have it out about what she did to him but they skirt by it. Seeing Faith was cool. The Faith inside Angel/Angelus' head ep was good but in retrospect, no real reason for Angelus to have been around except that it was fun to see DB playing Angelus again. So no real reason to have Faith around.

Liked Electrogirl too. And I'm still with the show because I keep thinking it's going to lead to something. But it leads to Jasmine. And it also leads to Skip saying that EVERYTHING that happened to Angel since the show began happened for a reason. HORSES***T! Of course! What an ingenious plan! Hey, let's use Wolfram and Hart to tempt Angel with Darla so they'll have sex and bring about Connor so that he'll have sex with Cordelia and that'll bring about Jasmine! What masterminds! What a load of crap! Did the folks at ME really expect us to buy that!? I expected to be treated better by ME.

So once Jasmine shows up, for me it's straight downhill. Didn't buy the climax, didn't buy Connor's suicidal/homicidal tendancies. Didn't buy the turning over of W&H to Angel and Co. for the reasons given. It just felt like the creators wanted a change-up and the excuse they came up with felt contrived. I did like the idea giving Connor a new life, but I didn't see why the rest of the Fang Gang couldn't know. So once S4 ends, you look at 3 and 4 in retrospect and and like you said it starts to go wrong right about when Holtz takes Connor away. But I did like what they did with Wes. And Wes and Lilah.

Then S5--I liked Nina. I loved Illyria. But since I couldn't buy the whole W&H thing I had trouble with S5 as a whole. "Smile Time" was a good stand alone. They never quite figured out what to do with Spike. But the fight scene for the Mountain Dew was in-freaking-credibly awesome! So was Wes blowing his "father" away. So it had a lot of good moments (Blondie Bear!?)but again the season felt like it had no direction.

Saw no reason why Buffy should mistrust Angel after all they've been through. She has no reason not to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"The Girl in Question" about made be puke and don't get me started on The Immortal.

So, some good stand-alones ("Harm's Way" and "You're Welcome"), some good moments in S5 but overall I felt like it was flapping in the breeze 'cause I just could not buy into the fact that Angel and friends were running W&H in the first place. It's also a bit dull until Spike b

Batmarlowe, your thoughts pretty much summed up how I feel.

One more thought I want to add though. I think the Jossverse is at its best when it's about the main characters and their relationships with each other. It's why Firefly is so good, and why I thought the last few seasons of Buffy and Angel were disappointing.
I understand why certain things had to happen, and especially with Joss, things can't be happy all the time. But before, it was about how the group stuck by and supported each other in the midst of trouble and tragedy. There can be rifts, like when Angel fired everyone, but there was the resolution of redemption and forgiveness. But with Wesley, we never got that resolution, once he was abandoned, the only reason he was "welcomed back" was because of a spell that made everyone forget about everything related to Connor. Cordelia became evil for the entire last season we saw her. In the last few seasons, everything that happened only seemed to drive people further apart, and never brought them back together. All the relationships built up over the first few seasons felt abandoned and ignored. There was none of the cohesiveness and warmth that I felt in the first few seasons, just everyone hating each other and not being funny.

Even so, I felt it was compelling television when it was on. When I didn't know what was going to happen, I still enjoyed it enough. But it doesn't have the rewatchability that the first few seasons of Angel and Buffy (and the entire Firefly series) has.

besides 5..1 & 2. 1st season of angel hit the ground running and 2 had darla, drusilla, and lots of lindsey. hooray!

5 was brilliant i think..aside from a few serious wastes of episodes (cough"girl in question" and "harm's way"cough), i thought it was a great season. although spike was just..excessive. as much as i love spike, i feel like he went through some severe character assassination.

i'm not a fan of 3/4, although, to be fair, i've never finished out either season. maybe i'll borrow the dvd's again and enter with an open mind.

"i feel like he went through some severe character assassination."

Really? I thought Angel S5 did a half-decent job of restoring some of his character following it's assassination in Buffy!
