Two things: it's got a fairly large fan base Universal know will help up any initial takings and will help market the film.

Secondly, it has Joss Whedon. Joss knows how to write. And he also knows how to write films (he wrote 95% of the dialog in Speed, Toy Story yadadadada).

Joss is a *HUGE* asset here. He's very intelligent. I suspect he's a large part of what sold the movie.

Movies based on failed TV series don't happen. Well, not very often at all - like, about twice now.

Credit not only to Joss's talent, but also his determination that the Firefly story would live on in one format or another.

Just too pretty to let die...!

When "they" saw the DVD sales of this show that "they thought no one knew existed go through the roof, somebody said "I smell a franchise". I don't know if Joss was pitching the movie before the DVD's came out or after but my undertstanding is that it was the DVD sales that got the movie greenlighted. Also the studio releasing SERENITY (Universal) is not the same as the one that produced the TV show (20th Century Fox). Hence the title change.

Actually, Joss has stated in interviews he decided to call the movie 'Serenity' to differentiate it from the TV series, not the studio.

"Movies based on failed TV series don't happen. Well, not very often at all - like, about twice now."

What other show(s) got cancelled only to get a movie made of them?

I was under the impression that we're living in a time of firsts... because FOX is stupid.

A cancelled TV show being uncancelled (Family Guy)...

and a cancelled TV show hitting the big screen (Serenity)...

Everyone always forgets the two first ones...

Star Trek: got cancelled, massive fan outcry. Gets another series (I think). Years later, a movie, another one, some more, four new TV series' and more movies besides.

Farscape: got cancelled, massive fan outcry. The miniseries gets funding entirely due to that outcry. Miniseries gets made. Miniseries wins big at the Saturn Awards.

As much as I love Firefly, don't forget that others made a comeback before Firefly did. Maybe not always to the level of a movie, but they did. Firefly is not *that* unique.
