Who is Book?

I am just Curious what anybody thought about the Book. I think he is an incredibly enigmatic character in the show. I have wondered if he used to be a criminal or some sort of agent for the Alliance. There has probably been some discussion on this before here.
Just interested to know any theories any of you fellow Browncoats have.

Please no spoilers(from the movie)!!!!!!!!!!
