The final episode of Farscape

Let me just say:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How could Sci-Fi not allow them to wrap this up? It was a FANTASTIC episode right up until that last scene. Now I think I'm going to be sick.

Not surprisingly, SFC's bboard seems to be "mysteriously" down tonight. I guess they realize all the hate mail they'd be recieving.

So let's see. Sam Beckett on "Quantum Leap" never made it home. "Sliders" ended on a cliffhanger. "Firefly" barely even got started. And now this. Why do I even bother watching?

Sigh. I'm so depressed.

I know, I was so pissed off when that happened. My only hope is that in a year or two there will be a Farscape miniseries or movie on Sci Fi.

I did like the ending of Quantum Leap though. I thought it was very appropriate, having Sam always out there, helping put right what once went wrong...

I wouldn't mind Sam still out there helping others, if he didn't have a wife and kid at home that he didn't even remember about. He should have at least been able to see them again and talk over his decision with them.

I hope for some continuation of Farscape as well, but the Henson Company is up for sale again and they can't do anything till that's resolved. Besides, I've been waiting forever for a QL or Sliders movie, so I'm not holding my breath on this one.

First I want to say that I liked the way Q.L. ended, and I like the way Farscape ended.

I think that choosing to use the cliffhanger ending of John and Aeryn's destruction as the end instead was fitting. I felt genuine anguish for D'argo. But I don't feel bad for John and Aeryn. I think the moment that they were turned to dust was the happiest moment of their entire lives. I think that if they lived, Aeryn would have changed her mind and started in with that 'born a peacekeeper, die a peacekeeper, watched you die once, etc.' stuff and they would have broken up, gotten back together, etc. For the two of them, nothing was ever going to top this one perfect moment when the whole world was right because they were together. I couldn't think of a better time for the end to come.

There are spoilers in here...

In my opinion, there is no other way to satisfactorally end Farscape than with a cliffhanger. It's so much more satisfying to know that, hey, their lives are going to go on, just like they always have... a little neutralization is nothing. I'd much prefer an ending that leaves their stories open, letting our imagination carry their stories forever.

Now, if Farscape was, say, cancelled during the second season with this ending, I would be upset. But since most of the story has been wrapped up and there were logical resolutions to most of the series' major over-arching plot pieces (John wanting to go back to Earth, He and Aeryn's relationship, D'Argo and Chiana's relationship, etc), I'm happy. I'm satisfied with this ending because, hell, even death hasn't stopped them in the past. Every season has ended on an intense cliffhanger. Why should it be that the finale end any differently? In my mind, the series finale should be the *biggest* cliffhanger the series has ever experienced. And that's what it was. The perfect ending for Farscape.

You know what? I don't think another season is vital (although I'd really like one). My fear is that Kemper & Co. would try to wrap everything up in a convenient little package and send us on our way with a shallow happy ending... they'd give us too much information, and we wouldn't have the ground to continue the story in our minds. In my mind, Aeryn and John will be reconstituted, and they'll fight for their lives with the rest of the Moyan crew, just as they always have. The family aboard Moya will be together forever, that that's how it should be. John has realized that Earth is no longer relevant to him, he belongs with his friends. And I have a feeling that if given the opportunity to go back to where they came from, not one of the family members aboard Moya would choose to return. They belong together, fighting for each other, and I have full faith that that's how their story will continue. D'Argo, Chiana, Rygel, Pilot and Moya will fight for Crichton and Aeryn... and they'll succeed as they always have. Just because their series ends, doesn't mean that their lives end... this is the ending Farcape deserves.

I agree with you Elka. I like that the story didn't end, that some where out there Farscape coninues, if only in our minds. It was better then just giving us a lame ending where all is well, while the whole bases of Farscape has been about loss and the persuit of happiness. As long as Crichton lived someone would always be seeking his knowledge of worm holes.

I hate it when series wrap-up all their plot lines. Great series like QL, DS9, and B5 just end the current tale and left us with the knowledge that it continues on through us.

While I'm all in favor of a "the adventures continue" ending, this specific ending was not the ending the producers had planned or desired. We can write whatever we want in fan fiction, but so far as the facts are presented on the show, John and Aeryn are dead, period. Unless they continue the show in some way, which is not highly likely.

That's the way I see it, anyway.

"Bad Timing"

Well, stay tuned for Battlestar Fucking Galactica, I guess.

Which just adds insult to injury, doesn't it? I mean, it's bad enough that they go and cancel the only show on the Sci-Fi Channel that I have the slightest interest in watching. Then they have to take that money and put it into shows based on the 1970's. They just showed a miniseries on Children of Dune, from 1976. Next up is a miniseries based on Riverworld, which was 1971. And they take this moment -- the series finale of Farscape -- to spring the news on us that after that, they're doing a remake of Battlestar Fucking Galactica. Hey, I thought science fiction was supposed to be looking to the future. Wha happen?

You want worse? Here's worse: I don't even know about this stuff from watching the commercials. Who watches commercials? No, I know all about the Sci-Fi Channel's upcoming lineup because they've started using that hideous technique of promoting future shows while the show that's currently airing is happening on the screen in front of you. They're "bottom-thirding," which means that every time they cut from a commercial break back to the show, they put an animation on the bottom third of the screen that tells you that there's a new Shannen Doherty reality series coming in a couple weeks.

They do this right over the show. Then, presumably, they run ads over that show telling you to watch the next show, and so on and so on, until eventually I guess there just aren't any TV shows left. Broadcast TV will just be an endless loop of promos for itself.

Is it too early to call for a consumer revolution on this? I pay good money for satellite TV; I don't need this nonsense. My fantasy is that the people rise up and march on the TV stations with pitchforks and rakes. Failing that, can we at least boycott the Shannen Doherty show, which I wasn't going to watch anyway?

Anyway, I don't mean to go on about it, but if I complain about the promo clutter, then I don't have to think about the last minute of the actual show. Which is the moment when all the goodness and kindness of the world was snuffed out like a candle, and all I was left with was Battlestar Fucking Galactica. You can see why I'd want to avoid dwelling on it.

But there's no way around it, so here goes. Time is clearly running out for our Farscape friends, because in the first minute of this episode, they all realize that they only have an hour left, and they have like five new plot points to establish. So it cuts back and forth between all the characters, who are running from room to room and shouting the new plot points at each other. It's like finals week on Moya, and everyone's cramming.

The big news, of course, is that last week I assumed that a whole bunch of people died, just because a nuclear fusion bomb went off about twenty feet away from them. Silly me. None of them are dead. The big-breasted Scarran emperor is alive, the Maleficent chick is alive. Everybody is apparently alive. Evil characters never die on this show. Only the puppies and kittens die.

So the not-dead Scarrans are planning to go through the wormhole to Earth in order to enslave the humans, take over the planet and steal some of the flowers. Which seems like a long way to go just for flowers, but try getting that across to the Scarrans. Everybody finds out about this plan because apparently the Scarrans were talking about it on their cell phones, and the Peacekeepers were listening in. Or something. This all gets established in shouty jump cuts, so it's hard to be sure.

John's way of dealing with this situation is to strap a nuclear bomb to Scorpius and push him out an airlock, which I can only say I entirely approve of. I wish I could deal that effectively with my irritating house guests.

By the way, all of this happens before the opening credits. They have a lot to get done this week.
