Hi there,
As I mentioned in a couple of my earlier posts, I'm brand new to Firefly and to this website. It's a complex show and a huge website, and I'm kind of feeling a little overwhelmed.

Is there any kind of FAQ that I can look at? Either about the show or this website? There's so many questions and references that I don't understand (and too afraid too ask)

Thanks,
Leee

Try www.browncoats.com (and make sure to look at my bloopers section under the episodes page) :)

Also, there's a "database" of FF info linked to on the left/bottom-left side of the main fireflyfans.net page.

But don't be afraid to ask questions. We're real friendly to newbies. Well, except for the niska-esque hazing rituals... ;p

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Hi Leee,

I'm sure if you have any questions, you could just ask one of the posters on this site. Everyone here seems very friendly and just a little bit knowledgable. We're a smart group.

What would you like to know?

Well I guess the only thing (for now) that I'm having trouble finding a reference to is the whole "shiny hat" thing. What's that all about?

I just finished watching the whole series for the first time, now I'm going back to listen to the commentaries!

In an obvious attempt to make sure the audience knows Firefly takes place in the future, it seems Joss took some words and changed their meanings. Thus throughout the series, the word 'shiny' usually translates to something like 'great' or 'nice.'

Where you or I might say, "That spaceship is really nice," or "I'm feeling great today," a character in the Firefly 'verse would probably say, "That spaceship is shiny," or "I'm feeling shiny today."

Hope that helps.

Also, there's a quote in the pilot Serenity.

Mal: I'd like to be king of all Londinium and wear a shiny hat.

Also, see the above post about the adjective "Shiny"

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

Also note the related "very fine hat? phrase Mal uses to mock Badger's superior attitude in the pilot ep.

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.
